261738 2004-08-14 10:45:00 Having being watching in the news and Fair Go's recent stories on those people receiving large toll bills, I've put my thinking cap on.

I would suggest that those using dialup internet or even those with a router but still have that legacy modem plugged into the wall change their country settings in their machine. I.e.; from NZ to USA or where ever, my reasoning for this is the dialers when they infect your machine will be armed with the correct dialing codes to call back from NZ if you are assigned as NZ and hence you will receive a large toll or 0900 bill. If however you change your country setting the STD code will be incorrect and the call in most cases will fail. If you still super paranoid get an 0900 block or toll bar with pin or failing that unplug your modem when your not using it.

Just remember not all the spyware removers will find ALL the spyware!
And for that reason you should be using at least two detectors.

261739 2004-08-15 00:55:00 Or if you think you have one just use Spybot to remove it or Trojan remover. Or type msconfig under start/run, look for any strange programs under startup and untick them. Or bring up task manager
look for any strange programs under processes and kill them. If you find any do a search on the net see what it is. Search for it on the hdd then remove it, or run regedit search for the file there. Then delete it. Then it wont run on startup.

261740 2004-08-15 04:21:00 That sounds quite a good idea Exwesty. :-)

It does puzzle me, though, why a modem that isn't being used is even plugged in.

261741 2004-08-15 08:52:00 You'd be surprised how many I've seen plugged in when no longer being used.
As regards to using software eg Adaware and Spybot to locate and remove such threats it was interesting that on the machine we located the dialer they had both been installed and run and neither located it, yet lo and behold their it was sitting in the connections directory. The only reason it hadn't been able to do any damage was because the country setting was defined as USA not NZ where the machine is domiciled.
As i'm suggesting changing the home country gives an added protection regardless of whether you run your spybot etc frequently or you don't keep the signatures up to date.

261742 2004-08-18 02:40:00 Found this the other day - Hav'nt tried it as I have not had this problem yet .
DialerZapper is a useful utility that prevents software from dialing out without your permission. There are many cases where you find out that your computer phoned a number and stayed online for hours, leaving you with a huge bill at the end of the month. This can happen either if you are using a dialup connection to the internet or if a malicious software uses your phone line (Dialers, Spywares). DialerZapper disconnects the line after a timeout you define, unless of course you approve the connection. DialerZapper is 100% FREE. Found at this address www.softbulldog.com

261743 2004-08-18 20:58:00 WARNING - TROJAN DIALLER VIRUS

Part way through the download from this site I was alerted to run AVG, which subsequently removed a trojan dialler. AdawareSE also removed 32 spyware nasties, and Spybot a further 2, all of which can be attributed to this site as this was the first browsing / download I did after my regular weekly nasty check up a few hours prior. So - tread carefully!

100% free? After several hours running AVG and AdfawareSE and Spybot etc, I still have some problems with residual progamming that I have yet to sort out! :-(

261744 2004-08-18 21:17:00 Check PF1 first for the names of AV and spyware/malware programmes especially before downloading and using or do an internet search for NameOfSoCalledFriendlyApp + Spyware or malaware or dialler the same goes for other sp called free deals, lotteries, etc.

Walone, hows you home page and start up items/processes at the mo?

261745 2004-08-19 02:53:00 Thanks Murrray. Everything appears OK except I can't get rid of a RUNDLL error that pops up every minute or so and pronounces;

RUNDLL
Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\Internet
The specified module could not be found
OK

I tried to do a Restore, but there were no waypoints set, so I couldn't go back (Lesson 2 out of this!). Are you able to suggest anything (your last sentence may indicate you anticipate something similar to this happening).

Cheers
