261978 2004-08-15 09:19:00 Hi guys and girls!! Well I Know this has been asked before, but I really need some opinions on which to go for - AMD64 or P4. But wait there's more! Main thing to think of is that I want this upgrade to do me till the end of next year (at least...longer if it can) also want the most cost effective option too....unfortunately I won't be able to do any more to my PC till then (going to be a poor student...<sigh>). So well still earning I want to upgrade to something that will still allow me to "work" through next year...(read: play games). I have a 9600XT graphics card so won't NEED to upgrade that....Oh, and I can wait a few months to do this upgrade too if there's reason to....thanks! davidb (5576)
261979 2004-08-15 09:27:00 I am TOLD that AMD are better value for money but I know nothing about it myself. zqwerty (97)
261980 2004-08-15 09:31:00 I think it would be best to wait til the end of the year. Then 64bit might be a bit more widespread and PCI-express may become the standard

I'm probably may off base here but hey :P

261982 2004-08-15 09:38:00 That's what I was thinking too, a bit more 64bit software might be nice I suppose! Thanks megaman.

Also, if anyone has upgraded from an Athlon cpu to a AMD64, can you let me know if you noticed a big difference in performance with gaming/video editing etc?

261983 2004-08-15 09:40:00 Sorry about that, I have AMD 2000+ CPU, 768MB RAM, gigabyte ga-7va mobo, radeon 9600XT graphics - My original post got wiped when I left it for a while so forgot to put back in!! Sorry bout that!! davidb (5576)
261984 2004-08-15 09:43:00 a 64bit cpu will only run 64bit capable software faster. All other software will run normal. But yeah, without 64bit windows coming out, (or you could use linux) 64bit cpu's are the way to go static (4108)
261985 2004-08-15 11:03:00 >> a 64bit cpu will only run 64bit capable software faster .

Faster then what exactly? . . . . seeing as a 32bit cpu wont run 64bit software at all i can't see what your comparing it to?

The fact of the matter is that leaving out all reference to 64bit software, even on our current 32-bit platforms the AMD cpu's are the best value and best performing chips available,The p4 equilivent costs 3 times as much (im talkin $1500 bucks here) and falls beind the amd product in many areas .

Plain and simple,The 939-pin 64bit AMD chip is the chip to get .

Someone also mentioned PCIe, . . . . Marketing, pure and simple,if he waited for that his current AGP card wouldn't have anywhere to go and he would have to buy a PCIe card, which give ZERO performance increase over AGP,and will not give any benifit for at least 2 more generations of cards .

Its not the slot it plugs into that defines the speed, its the chipset on the card . and no chipset/card can make use of the bandwidth supplied by PCIe .

And if you look at teh cards available, they are identical chipsets as whats on the agp eqilivent, only more expensive .

261986 2004-08-15 12:00:00 Metla - wow!! lol, I was hoping that you'd reply to this post -I'd just been reading through previous posts that you'd replied to about this cpu. I know what you mean about the PCI express, it's not really a huge factor in my decision as like I said I've got my 9600xt for now....

One thing, the socket939 cpu looks to be a little more than I wanted to spend at the moment, (I think my fiance woulld kick me very, very hard!!lol). Are the socket 754 cpu's worth looking at in your opinion or should I just take the kicking and go for a 939 cpu and mobo!??!

261987 2004-08-15 12:11:00 The only reason I mention the 939-pin specifically is because that’s the pin array AMD have settled on, the others are transitions boards, I make a point of avoiding that gear so don't recommend it to others.

I would suggest you take the kicking and get the 3500 cpu.
