2004-08-15 08:16:00 | I use Paradise High-Speed cable, and periodically I lose contact with the DNS. When this happens I can't access the internet or send emails until I reboot my DLink firewall. For several weeks everything is okay, then this weekend again 3 times I lose contact. Makes no difference whether the PC is idle or switched off, or whether I'm downloading. Suddenly I can't see the DNS any more when I try to ping it. And sometimes when I ping it, like now, there will be a timeout for one of the four ping attempts. I have a couple of PCs, different operating systems - problem always the same. Antivirus and spyware are not involved. Is the problem likely to be me (ie the DLink firewall), a setting somewhere, or is the problem with the ISP? Any way I can verify this? Thanks, Duncan. | ledzep (1441) | |

(Of course they won't be --- it's not working :D :O :_|) It's most likely to be in that unit. Perhaps someone who has one will know if it's typical. ;-) What model is it? |

2004-08-16 07:04:00 | What are the lights on the cable modem doing? If the modem is dropping off the cable network then coming back on, this is why you need to reboot your firewall, but if the modem isn't dropping off at all, then you'll need to look into your router....If you're not too sure whether your modem is at fault (ie dropping off in the middle of the night or when you're not around to see) you could try ringing Paradise and asking them to look into the modem and see how long it's been online etc... | davidb (5576) | |
2004-08-16 08:18:00 | It is a DLink DI-804, which is router, firewall, 4-port switch, DHCP, NAT, etc. All the lights are flashing as they should be and the setup information is all as it should be. Unfortunately there is no error message log of any sort. It doesn't look to be locked up - for example, I can still access other PCs attached through the switch. I just can't get to the internet. | ledzep (1441) | |
2004-08-16 08:23:00 | The lights on the cable modem are fine. I don't like rebooting the cable modem because it can take a minute or more to re-acquire lock (flashes orange in those instances). Sometimes I have no connection when I've started the PC up in the morning, but other times I've been working with downloads underway, and the connection has ceased. At those times there can't have been a cable modem dropout because I would have noticed the modem lights flashing. I can ping around the other PCs on the network, but can't ping either primary or secondary DNS at Paradise. The equipment is on all the time. Is there any other way I can work out whether it is me or Paradise? | ledzep (1441) | |
