261822 2004-08-15 04:46:00 I remember reading somewhere some instructions about how to copy all the emails in outlook express onto disc. (Sent box, Deleted box etc)
Can someone point me in the right direction please?
I often refer back to emails sent months ago and don't want to delete them completely however there are thousands in my sent folder alone this is definately slowing down the programme.
Once they are burnt to CD is there much involved with "looking through them again"?
Thanks in advance

261823 2004-08-15 04:51:00 Go to where you have them stored drag them into a folder name it august emails or what ever and then send it to your cd drive.

Any idea where to start looking in my C Drive?
Where is the default area for outlook express?

261825 2004-08-15 05:06:00 What i have done is as follows.
In Outlook Express click on tools click Maintenance . near the bottom of this dialog box you will see "click store folder to change the location of your message store" If you want to change from where windows stores you emails so you can find them easly click the button. change and select where you want them stored ie: my documents then click o.k . i think you have to restart for this to take effect. when i do my backup i send all the email folders to a folder as described above windows recreates new fresh empty ones when you restart the computer again.

261826 2004-08-15 05:30:00 Johnboy has given you good advice about one way of saving your emails .

Another way is to create a folder within OE (call it, say, August2004 or whatever you wish) and move all your emails to that folder . Exit OE and do a search on your hard drive for August2004 . dbx and back that up to your CD or wherever . When you are absolutely sure that the backup works and is not corrupted you can then delete the August2004 from within OE . You can actually do this with all the folders currently in OE (not the Deleted folder though, for obvious reasons) - just do a search for * . dbx files and save those onto your CD or whatever .

The only problem with this method is that you cannot access the emails just by browsing the . dbx folder, the emails have to be extracted from it first . There is a program called DBXtract that will do that for you, or you can import the . dbx folder back into OE and browse it from there . Either way it is a little cumbersome .

That is the method that I use to backup my emails but if you think you will be wanting access to some backed up emails occasionally I think I would probably do what Johnboy has suggested .

Do note that after copying to a CD then back to your hard drive you will not be able to access the emails until you remove the Read Only attribute from the files/folder .

Needing abit of clarification.
I have found the email files and yes can burn these to disk BUT the main step that I need help with now is a way to view them from time to time.

its not really a back up that I need, however that is handy....now that I've got them onto CD I would like to be able to delete them from my C Drive and then when I want to check back for some dated email I sent, I need to be able to view them from CD.

I did a quick google for DBXtract but wasn't too sure about this, is it a free programme?

261828 2004-08-15 12:28:00 I believe they charge for dbextract nowadays, free versions were available and probably still are. Do a search of the forum, I think I may have even posted a link to a free version not long ago.

What I do for emails is at the end of each month make a new folder on my desktop, then inside that folder make one called inbox, and one called sent items, then I open ie, simply select all the emails in my inbox and drag a copy into my newly created folder, same goes with sent items.

I then delete them from IE, burn a backup of my new folder and then move the folder into my documents.

To access an email I simply go to my folder and click on the appropriately titled email (or .eml)....it then opens in IE.

I find the entire business of working with dbx files unsatisfactory.

Agree totally ;-) .

Way to go, what a great and simple tip Metla :-) . Ive tried the import, dbxtract and other ways etc . . . But your solutions got to be tops on my list, so simple too, don't know why i had never tried it ?:| . Had done the individual save, the same way in theory (too tedious), but hadn't thought of the dragging them all selected over . . . Works a treat :-) .
Just did my Inbox etc . . . in no time, great! Beats the heck out of having to use dbxtract, convert etc . . . and look through or some of the other ways ive tried .

Cheers :-)
