262539 2004-08-17 09:44:00 Hi y'all

My extremely computer-illiterate friend has a Lexmark 1000 inkjet parallel-ported to a PC running Win95 (yes, really!). The printer appears to have died. It looks like there is no power getting to the printer as it does not react at all when turned off/on at the wall. Deleting/reinstalling from Windows fails when the installation tries to communicate with the printer.

"I was trying to change a cartridge" is about the most technical description I can get of what was happening when it stopped working. I have a suspicion she may have tried to physically move the cartridge carriage when the printer was powered off.

I realize it is almost certainly not going to be worth repairing professionally, but money is very much an issue here, so if anyone has any insights into what might have happened or what I can try to do to fix it they would most welcome.

262540 2004-08-17 10:53:00 I believe those Lexmarks used a power brick. If you can borrow a multi voltage power supply with adaptors, you can locate the correct voltage on the lexmark power brick and give that a go.
Doubt that even wrenching the cartridge carrier would prevent the printer powering up.

Me neither - but that's all I have to go on.

I would have expected it too, but this one plugs straight into the wall.

262542 2004-08-17 11:13:00 Realise you have probably tried these and stating the obvious

Swapped for another power cord
disconnected from comp and tried again
cartridge carrier set back to park position
cartridge inserted correctly
protective seal on cartridge removed (if it has one)

otherwise where's metla when you need him ?

Haven't got one to try.- it is one of those with a a small connector rather than a "standard" pc one. The current one superficially looks OK.

>disconnected from comp and tried again
Done that

>cartridge carrier set back to park position
It is already there as far as I can see - I think she couldn't move it when she tried it.

>cartridge inserted correctly
It is still the old one inserted at present.

>protective seal on cartridge removed (if it has one)
See above

All good suggestions, but I would have expected some activity on power-on even if the cartridge was missing/dodgy - or am I mistaken?

262544 2004-08-17 22:42:00 Figure 8 connector type ? (looking from rear)
Lot of appliances have those in normal houses so someone you know will have one. portable stereos, older vcrs etc

Yes, that's the one. I'll see if I can find a spare, but I am not too optimistic.

262546 2004-08-25 06:23:00 My friend has finally got the power cord checked and it is OK. She is becoming resigned to having to possibly replace the printer, but as I said before, I know she can ill-afford the ~$100-$200 to get another one. So if there are any more ideas out there...

262548 2004-08-25 12:38:00 FWIW you can get inkjets from trademe for a lot less than the price you specified, the issue will be the cost of replacement cartridges - BTW there isn't an on/off switch located at the base of the printer that has been inadvertently switched off?
