262507 2004-08-17 08:32:00 With Microsoft having pulled the plug on the release of SP2 and no obvious sign of a release date will it still make it on the PCW cover disk for September. drys (347)
262508 2004-08-17 08:53:00 er.....

SP2 has been out for over a week.

the delay you talk of turned out to only be three days.

a number of F1 users have posted links as to where to download sp2.

i see no problem with it getting on the cover disk.

262509 2004-08-17 09:10:00 As a matter of interest,
Was in Nelson Post shop today and noticed the August PCWorld magazine, the only one left.Went and picked it up to see what was on this months disc, and saw about 6 disc's in the tray.Obviously some people are not to concerned about no disc in the mag. When I mentioned to the PS staff, they were unaware where the disc's had come from,as no one has ever enquired as to what had happened to the free disc that came with the magazine they had purchased.Upon asking,I was allowed one,the rest went under the counter.I'll be back in there next month, hoping to get lucky again, for obvious reasons.

Main reason its a large download, no good for dailup unless you have a very understanding teenager who needs to use the phone or ISP :D
Sp2 available as an adminstrative install, it will start to be drip feed to to home users shortly I believe through the normal updating process using the microsoft update site(or you can get from Sept PC World (NZ)), its interesting to setup and I like the the improvements but thats my point of veiw,

Get your facts right first Greg S, You will only have problems is you are running Unreal Tournament, Photoshop Elements and most file-sharing programs & possible a few other programs

And as well t is Not what you call "buggy" Like SP1 was (which was truly buggy)there are only a few programs that has not been update to support SP2

This might be one reason "Microsoft delays SP2 auto update" (news.com.com), but as I have Win Xp SP 2 RC 2, I all ready download & about to install SP2 full, so I cant say if there is any other reason.

262514 2004-08-18 02:53:00 Tell IBM, stu. ;-) They would love to feel that their 400000 desktops would continue to work if they had SP2 applied. However, they are not that optimistic. IBM just says no (pcworld.co.nz). Graham L (2)
262515 2004-08-18 03:10:00 buggy as hell,2 of the 3 comps I installed it on had issues.

1 lost all means of communicating to the router, the second messed up Nero.

The idea that only UT and PS elements are to be affected is just ridicules, expect the list of affected programs and users to be enormous.

262516 2004-08-20 02:17:00 System administrators who have been installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 on their own PCs and on test systems are reporting the results of their practice runs to the SANS Institute Web site--and the failure rate seems to be pretty high .

While the vast majority of the 752 people who published feedback (as of this blog entry) had no problems, 15 percent of these competent technology professionals complain that severe problems prevent the PC from being used after they installed the service pack . About half of those say they had to rebuild the entire system from scratch after they ran SP2 .

Although i would have to question the arts of those that had to "rebuild from scratch"
