262419 2004-08-17 03:36:00 Hi fellow F1ers

I am considering leaving Windows Xp to have Linux installed. I used Linux before but was confused so uninstalled it. This was Red Hat (v?)

Which linux distribution do you recommend? I am a newbie and want something simple like Windows Xp so my girlfriend can also use it, and possibly not even know I changed operating systems too.

I would like to know if Linux has software that can replace the following programs and also creates file formats which are also compatible in their Windows counterpart:

Word (*.doc), PowerPoint (*.ppt), Excel (*.xls) and the whole MS Ofice pack

Photoshop (.psd)

Illustrator (*.ai or *.eps)

Hope Im not asking for too much.

I like to see screenshots, features and costs.

Xandros also is easy to use and is not too radically different to Windows in appearance that is freaks out people. It is Linux though and not Windows, so keep that in mind. Xandros is debian based.

Crossover Office (www.codeweavers.com)

If you don't want to pay for Xandros, Open Office will handle most of the MS Office files and this comes with most Linux distro's - not sure what you mean by the whole pack? Is this access etc as well? Off the top of my head, I am not sure what Linux apps also handle .psd, .ai and .eps files.

Have a look at Mandrake 10 (www.mandrakelinux.com). It is a very simple solution for newbies, and I know it works in your area. :) The site should answer a lot of your questions, and it won't cost anything but your time to look. The "Move" CD is a "live-cd" that will run on boot up (on a compatible system) from the CD without using your hard drive or interfering with your current system. This let's you get the feel, without commiting yourself.
Google will take you to a wide range of places of interest, if you have the time.

...And why not?

We've sat down Customers at the Cyber Cafe I work at who have used Xandros Linux and not known the difference!
We use DesktopX to give our desktop a slightly better functional look but to the customer, Xandros is Windows with the Start button renamed.

I laugh at this because we've simply given MozillaFirefox, XMMS, Kuickshow, aMSN and Yahoo their respective Windows alternative Icons (Being Internet Explorer, WinAmp, IrfanView, MSN Messenger and Yahoo) and names.

Quite funny IMO :-) Ignorance is bliss.....
