262495 2004-08-17 07:02:00 Have aquired a second computer, and was interested to know if I can change the name from the previous owner, who it's registered to.It's the name that appears in the System Properties, under the General tab.
It's running XPhome.

262496 2004-08-17 07:07:00 In the system32 folder you change the oem info ini file.
Hopefully that gives you a tip, if you want further instructions post back, and I will have a look for instructions.

262499 2004-08-17 08:04:00 Thanks for that Rob and Jen.

Once again I get to learn a bit more.
The request came from a person who is interested in buying it from me,and wants his name on it.

While we're at it,
the computer in question has OfficeXPpro installed, and Works Suite 2003 also.If I delete these programs completely,am I able then,to install them on my computer,I have all the installation discs and keys,or would I be doing something I shouldn't be doing.

Thanks again

Depends on the versions.

If they are OEM versions, chances are you will not be able to re-activate them, as they will be "locked" by MS to the hardware they were originally activated on. Thats also a condition of the EULA, they can only be transferred with the hardware.

If they are full versions though they will be transferrable. If they do not activate it will take a phone call to MS to explain you have uninstalled from the old PC.

262501 2004-08-17 08:47:00 Thanks for that GF.

Yes they are OEM versions,so they can stay where they are.
That counts that idea out.

262502 2004-08-17 09:14:00 I assume that MS do not "reset" the activations on OEM versions as they do on others after several months, but you would only find out by trying. godfather (25)
262503 2004-08-17 09:32:00 Cheers GF, for sowing the seed of adventure

Although the programs in question were installed,I know they were never used at any time by the previous owner,so I may give the works suite a try.
The Office XP pro is the Academic Edition and states;for use by Qualified Educational User only*.I consider myself a qualified educational user, maybe not in the fields of education that they are use to,but I'm definitely a qualified educator in my profession.

Is it nessecary to have them both,or is one of the programs sufficient?

262504 2004-08-17 10:52:00 You do not need Works if you have Office, thats for sure.

If Office is Academic, it should re-activate OK.
