2004-08-18 07:36:00 | What is your general opinion on SP2 for XP. Is it an essential install? I am very reluctant to install SP2... am I justified in feeling this way or have the media and anti MS entities exaggerated the "bugginess" of SP2. What about all the reported software packages that appear not to function properly with SP2 (the list includes some of MS own software) For now I'm putting SP2 on hold...what do you think? Your comments appreciated. cheers chiefnz

2004-08-18 07:47:00 | I think I'm waiting a while to see if they release any fixes for it before I'll give it a go, then again I might get bored and go what the heck. ;) I wonder if installing XP fresh from a slipstreamed copy would be more stable than patching it?

2004-08-18 09:16:00 | Hi chiefnz, I've had no problems so far with SP2, run several different programs, old and new, and had no issues. I don't run any really old programs (eg pre 98 or so), so I don't know about those, but no problems here. I would say though that any service pack is an essential install. Sure, you could probably get away with not installing it for a couple of months, but I would suggest that you will need it eventually. Remember, also, that with Windows 2000, some programs require specific service packs to have been applied before you can install them. Mike.

2004-08-18 09:39:00 | I have install SP2 on 9 PC's and only have a possible problem on two of them, both my own PC's. My prob might not be an SP2 issue but one thing it did do on my laptop is altered the wireless connection. I used to use the configuration utility that came with the wireless card. With SP2 this no longer could make a connection and have to use the XP utility. | Berryb (654) | |
2004-08-18 09:42:00 | I've given up looking at the pros and cons. I intend installing it from the CD in the PC World Magazine, if I can get hold of it. If SP2 so much as stuffs up even just one of my programs, [ I've got rid of all the ones I installed but never really used, have saved to disk any programs downloaded, and have the original CD's for the others], then I'll be using my Product Recovery CD to get my notebook back to where it was when I first started. It will also give me a chance to see if the Recovery CD works or not. Only thing that concerns me a wee bit, is the Windows updates I picked up since getting the notebook in March. Did someone mention in a Post about being able to get a CD with them all on it? If so, then everything is fine as far as I'm concerned. What may work on someone else's computer doesn't necessarily mean it will work on your own. Only real way to know is to jump in feet first, but ensure there is an escape route back to where you started. I'm just a Newbie in all things "Computer", but I reckon there are going to be a lot of computer literate people who are going to be as unsure as I am with this latest Windows package. Here's to a safe install and an even safer uninstall. Regards, Marg.

2004-08-18 10:24:00 | Thats interesting. SP 2 is there in add/remove programs but no sign of SP 1 or all the other hotfixes that were there. If SP 2 is removed what are we left with I wonder?

2004-08-18 11:04:00 | Yes you can apply to Microsoft for update cd, and they post it out. But it only has fixes up until Febuary this year. Any you have downloaded since then will have to be redownloaded. Will try and find a link for you. Found it and it says 'sorry, cd not now available". Sorry. Maybe you can find someone who has it, if you need it or advertise here, surely someone lives near you that can burn a copy. | supergran (108) | |
2004-08-18 11:05:00 | I've had it installed for a couple of weeks, and it isn't causing any problems for me. | somebody (208) | |
