262745 2004-08-18 04:14:00 Hey guys...

Got a few problems with ye old linux (Mandrake 10.0),

1) I tried to mount hda7 or part 7 on my hard disk to mnt/data however I had to do it from a konsole as root and now I cannot access the drive through konqueror etc. It says I dont have permissions. So I try to go change the permissions with some utility and I tell it to make myself the owner and it doesn't work.

2) Next I tried to login to the GUI as root. However it just has that mandrake login screen where you have to select from a list of users then type the password. And I can't figure out how to create a second root user...

3) So now I try to copy the stuff out of data to documents as root, but I try cp /wallpapers /home/user/documents and it says Omiiting folder... WTF?! I can only copy them one by one...

4) I can umount /mnt/data, it says device busy...

Any help would be appreciated...

That's because only Root can view it :-)
Try editing /etc/fstab so it says:
/dev/hda7 /mnt/data auto users,nohide 0 0
Then run (Only this once) the command:
chmod -R 777 /mnt/data

Its hidden. Run kcontrol to get the KDE Control Panel and have a play around in there with Login Manager. Im not on my PC ATM (At a CyberCafe) so I cant help too specifically sorry.

cp -R /wallpapers /home/user/documents
-R = Recursive ;-) Otherwise like its doing, it'll skip directories

Why bother unmounting it? Do you need to?
It's busy because you have a window open that is viewing /mnt/data or its subcontents.
try cd / before you umount /mnt/data :-)

Let us know how you get on

Cheers

Use the "Star": System/Configuration/KDE/System/Login Manager

You will need to enter the root password. Click on the "User Tab". Under the Hidden Users list remove the mark adjacent to the root user. Next time you login root will be there.

262749 2004-08-18 21:34:00 Also, how can I get to a network drive. Or in effect, do the equivalent of mapping a network drive on windows.

I thought it would be the mount //SERVER/DRIVE/ME /Server but no... it wouldn't work...

262750 2004-08-18 21:37:00 mount -t smbfs -o username=USER,password=PaSs //192.168.0.20/Sharename /mnt/sambasharename

smbfs = Samba File System. Samba (AKA SMB) is the way that Windows communicates basically over a LAN for File-sharing :-)
