262715 2004-08-18 02:29:00 I have installed SP2 on both my PC and Laptop. I also install Office 2003 about the same time. I find both machines are doing this same problem so it must be to be with either SP2, Office or software compatibilty. If I try to delete a file or right click the hour glass comes up and stays. If I do this while working in a folder I can "End Task" in Task Manager but not while on the desktop. This happens most times but I did manage to delete all temp files without going to the cmd prompt.
Any know if this is a known problem before I start disabling programs.

262716 2004-08-18 02:48:00 Ms have put this mskb out on compatibility issues with sp2 wether it applies to your problem ??

Some programs seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2
sp2 (support.microsoft.com)

262717 2004-08-18 06:44:00 This may sound strange, but are you left clicking on the file name first to select it and then right-clicking on it? I could max out my CPU by merely right-clicking on a file without first selecting it. May or may not have any bearing on your problem but worth a shot. :) Jen C (20)
262718 2004-08-18 07:03:00 Almost virulent behaviour, are the PC's networked at all? How do malware/virus scans come out.

Jen, running modern software on a 386SX is bound to have that affect time to
upgrade to a DX :p or is this just a quirk of XP?

Cheeky blighter Murray :p

I have you know this bug doesn't occur on 386SX's. See here (archives.neohapsis.com) and here (www.genesistems.com). I have no idea whether MS has done anything about it or whether my machine still does this as I hardly use XP nowadays.

Just thought it just might be behind this problem. Certainly suspicious that two PC's now do this after SP2 and Office was installed though. Easiest option is to uninstall Office on one of the machines and see what happens.

262720 2004-08-18 07:51:00 Your telling me you blame XP for your lack of horse power. Well I guess poor old Bill and his software is as convenient as any other whipping boy :\

Cheers Murray ;P

262721 2004-08-18 09:32:00 Both systems are clean with spybot, adware and Antivirus up to date. I have found that I can right click on a folder as normal but when I right click on a file the problem persists. It is all most like a permissions issue. I have redone some permissions with no success so are looking deeper at group policy. Berryb (654)
262722 2004-08-18 09:41:00 Meant to add that the PC's are networked. PC hardwired, laptop wireless. Berryb (654)
262723 2004-08-18 11:13:00 Problem solved. Another search on google helped. DivX was the problem. Found the answer here forums.divx.com Berryb (654)
