| 262948 | 2004-08-20 09:42:00 | Could I Please re-visit my Query? I seem to have lost track a bit. I did a printout of Spybot's list of running processes, & took it into Metla. He recommended removing a lot of stuff. Do not really feel competant to do this (even tho it is approaching the end of the month ,when my IQ figure will be at its highest. 31). So I will sit tight for the moment & do nothing. Thanks for your help. The second part of the query, that evolved from part 1, was about an "on screen ADSL Usage meter. To second guess Telecom Xtra. From the Xtra Usage site, our 1gb rate went over by about 400mb. So that is going to hurt, our own fault for not controlling ourselves. When I bring up the broadband/adsl stus window, it shows "packets inward 7 outward numbers rolling upwards. So ... is it those running processes which are causing ths apparent usage??. If I "pull the plug" on the router to disconnect the line, this number movement stops. What is happening here please?? An onscreen usage meter would help, don't you think?? PJ |

| 262952 | 2004-08-22 08:50:00 | A little more info if you will please. With the Internet Gateway Connection box on screen. It shows the connection speed, about 6.5mb I think: the time on line, duration. In the bottom half it shows "packets _ sent/received. Upward moving figuresfor Gateway & this computer. First what are the packets, the numbers, are these bytes?? Second, when we are up or downloading I can understand these numbers increasing as this is our usage. But why should they move when nothing is happening. I am missing something I think. Is there anywhere I can read up on this ?? Thanks. PJ |

| 262954 | 2004-08-22 09:32:00 | PJ Don't quite know if this is related to your problem<Further to the above. Why does the Icon bootom right, The two little screens icon keeps disappearing??> but here goes. A couple of months back now I had this disappearing internet icon (two tiny screens) happen to me. For the life of me could find no answer for the problem. So instead of putting the puter into Stanby mode or Hibernation mode I shut the bloodie thing down, not Reboot/Restart. And since I started that I have not had the problem of the disappearing internet icon (two tiny screens). Any help to you. PS And when those screens disappear one can not log off the internet. :D cheers merlin-nz ;-) |
