262982 2004-08-18 11:17:00 OK, so far we have discussed what could go wrong with SP2. Most who have installed it say it hasn't created any problems.

My question is: What has it given you that was better than before? Speed increases? More compatibility?

I don't only want to know what possibily may go wrong but want to know what benefits are noticeable, bearing in mind that I haven't had any real problems with SP1 and regular MS updates - why change things?

262983 2004-08-18 11:25:00 My other problem was due to SP2. DivX didn't like Data Execution Prevention (DEP) so had to disable it. All seems to be working fine now. Berryb (654)

What is the difference? You are getting from the same source!!;)

262985 2004-08-18 11:56:00 my veiw and experance with SP2 so far
its good
I have it installed on my work pc (on a Novel LAN) on my home pc as well as my laptop and have no complaints.
I in fact like the extra security it adds. Security center now tells me if my virus checker needs to be updated also xp firewall is disabled, and updates are enabled which in my veiw is good, but for for the more experanced may be annoying. But Security Center is customisable in the way it delivers its message (you can turn off the warnings). I have had no incompatiblities problems with applications and we deliver applications through the network as well as installed on the local machine both dos based apps and windows apps, ftp and putty seem ok with xp sp2 also.
We are installing it on all new client machines that get installed on our network now.
I believe they may have got it right this tiime.

262986 2004-08-18 12:17:00 just one other thing
xp firewall
WOW what an improvement but still not perfect in that it does not monitor nor stop (unauthorized) outward traffic.
It is customisable ie I can stop remote assistance from a specified ip range and also allow the the same from a specified ip range. I can add allowed actions ie vnc connection from one ip but not another or a range of ip's.
good if you havent got 3rd party firewall but not the complete answer yet

262987 2004-08-18 12:21:00 SP2 creates a restore point before installing, roll back the restore and you are back to where it was before no harm done, completed that three times today on one pc just to see if I would break it. nothing broken. Wayne H (1736)
262988 2004-08-18 13:14:00 I will not be installing sp2 unless its asked for. My XP is rock solid and I want it to remain so :) Mzee (158)

It is like ly to make people feel more secure than they should. In my opinion a software firewall that does not block outbound traffic is not a firewall at all. I will admit it would still stop a few viruses propogating.

262990 2004-08-18 21:16:00 I've uninstalled it
Ran fine for a day, even thought my machine was running faster & smoother, then all hell broke loose.
Opening a folder (any folder took minutes) then there was nothing inside them!
Opening My Computer took ages (often crashed) when it recovered from a "not responding state" there was also nothing there.
Random explorer crashes & lockups.
Uninstalled it & everything back to normal.
I've since installed it on a fresh XP Pro install on another machine & it seems to be running ok
I must have something on my main machine it doesn't like

262991 2004-08-18 21:52:00 I installed it onto a PC and a laptop at work and both have been running fine since SP2 RTM was released.
I did slipstream it and make a CD and install from scratch though so maybe that's the best way of doing it??
