262955 2004-08-18 08:59:00 Hi all.
I'm am very annoyed.
I live in a rural area in South Taranaki.
I have been limited to Dial up for years, and last year, Telecom annouced they were upgrading Taranaki's exchanges to support ADSL.
Anyway - all was good until a few months later when the details came out - they weren't upgrading the one i was on (Normanby)
So the community got to gether - and after a year, they have finally agreed to upgrade it.
this was done yesterday.
However, after checks on the jetstream site - an da few calls to TC, they said it wasn't connected.
And then i got this email:

Well, i wasn't happy.
I had been waiting for years to get ADSL - finally comes, and i can't get it.
After another inquiry i get this:
*****************
Hi Alex
In dollar terms it would be about $8000 to upgrade the cabinet.
Alternatively if you can guarantee $500 worth of spend a month purely on the Telecom Jetstream service be it yourself of with the other people you mention then we can look at upgrading it. The bottom line sadly is it has to be economically feasible to do. The best thing to do is for you and your neighbours to register an interest online if this is the case and then we can get the ball rolling cheers Lorraine Brianag-Chisholm Service Co-ordinator 0800108010 ext 38341 ddi 033538341

So yeah, not really what i has hoping for!!
But what i'm asking for is:

1) Does anyone know anuything about these pcm cabinet's?
2) if so - how many people will be on it? Ie, will it just be people on our road? just me? or quite a few ppl? becos if its the latter - i might be able to get a few ppl interested.
3) does anyone have any ideas as to what i could do? Can you change from this to the main exchange (i've sent emails - but probably a few dasy b4 a reply) or anyone i could talk to that could maybe get it upgraded?

4) if not - does anyone know of any other Broadband services availkable in Sth taranaki that are currently availiable or coming in the future?

Thanks

262956 2004-08-18 09:09:00 Can you find out where this cabinet is located? Then maybe someone might be careless enough to reverse their tractor into it in the middle of the night. Then telecom would have to replace it. Just a thought. Andrew B (867)
262957 2004-08-18 09:10:00 Well with a profit of >$100,000,000 you'd think that can afford $8000!

Sorry that was no help, but maybe you could look into other methods of internet (Satelite, wireless etc)

262958 2004-08-18 09:16:00 yea, exactly.

About the other options:
WIRELESS: WAY to much - $1000 installation, $100+ per/mnth - no thanks
SAT: Had a mate who tried it - sed stay away from it, and plus, you still need the dialup connection - we were looking forward to going on net/phone at same time

Lol, just talking to my neighbour (who was also keen) and he thought that it was at our (now closed) local skool - about 1km from my place.
That idea might work :P

262960 2004-08-18 09:53:00 Been in the same situation as you but I was lucky as under the project probe and Frontera deal it was installed in the cabinet about 1.5km down the road. I am 6km from the local exchange and between the cabinet and exchange is fibre optic. Have you many dairy farmers around you. Frontera wish to have all of their suppliers on broadband by end 2005 so this may help you. Good luck, Jetstream is great. Sorry had to add that :) Berryb (654)
262961 2004-08-18 10:54:00 Hi.
hmmm, yes - there are a few diary farms around us (we're a small Dry Stock Farm).
Do you think if i get one or 2 of them to get into tlaks with TC they might upgrade it??!

262962 2004-08-18 11:20:00 Either get them to talk to Telecom or Fonterra or both. If they are that interested it may help. Berryb (654)
