262808 2004-08-18 04:15:00 Hi

I have recently bought the Plextor ConvertX M402u to transfer old home vhs tapes to DVD.
The quality of capture is good but the video picture freezes after a variable time of capture (anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours after starting) and the computer locks up needing a reset to free it.

Equipment: Amd 2200+, 80gb hard drive, Radeon 9200 AGP card (new to see if older graphics card was the cause) running under Win 2000 sp4.

I have downloaded latest Plextor firmware updates as well as the Win DVD Creator update.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Shaun

262809 2004-08-18 05:11:00 A couple of questions:

How much RAM does your system have?

Do you display the video on screen during capture, or is it a direct copy from vhs to disk (nothing visual)?

262810 2004-08-18 08:32:00 Sorry, forgot to mention I have 512mb ram (also upgraded from 128mb to try solve problem). Yes, I have been displaying the video on screen and capturing to hard drive. The updated Win Dvd Creator does have the option of turning off video display but that has not solved the problem. Shaun (6042)
262811 2004-08-18 09:00:00 How many processes/programs do you have running in the background? Try turning off as many programs as you can and trying again. There may be a program or three that do something like a disk write or something every hour or so that affects your capture. Perhaps you've got a program looking for an internet connection or the like - anything like that could take CPU/RAM/Disk usage and possibly interrupt an intensive process like a video capture.

262812 2004-08-18 23:05:00 When capturing video that is the only process that I have consciously running. I will check to see (and disable) any other background processes that I may find. I do use a dial up internet a/c so any programme that tries to access the internet will cause a jam.
Any truth in the notion that Win 200 is buggy when it comes to video capture? (something I picked up in doing general searches on the internet).

Thanks

262813 2004-08-18 23:10:00 More likely some motherboards have issues with the process and required hardeware,Some manufacturers have suggested chipsets/hardware configurations and a list of chipsets known to not be up to the task.

I would suggest looking for a manufacters forum or faq page,or doing a search on www.dvdrhelp.com

262814 2004-08-18 23:55:00 How many PCI slots are you using? There could also be issues with interrupts. I had a similar problem capturing video with my old pc, random frequent lockups. I was using a Promise controller (for an extra HDD) and nearly every slot was taken up by a card. I'm convinced the problem was a conflict between the HDD card and the USB2/Firewire card, both demanding a lot from (and overloading) the PCI bus. Sb0h (3744)
262815 2004-08-19 03:33:00 I am only using 1 slot for the modem, otherwise all are free.

Thanks

262816 2004-08-19 03:44:00 I have a query going to Plextor NZ in the hope that they can help.

I was hoping that by using a hardware capture device I would not overload my system.

Thakns

262817 2004-08-19 05:04:00 On my Win 98SE pc I used to Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close everything down EXCEPT Systray & Explorer when capturing video to the pc.

Not sure if your system will be the same.
