263195 2004-08-19 06:08:00 Just acquired an external HD 120 Gb. If I do following:
My Compter/Edit/Select All/ Copy Selected Items / Drive E:
Will this copy the entire contents of my existing HD to the external HD as a backup in case of a HD crash ? Using windows XP.
The select all highlights all the folder on my existing HD, does this mean all the files in the folders will be copied ? Thanks in advance.

263196 2004-08-19 06:32:00 No, you will get "file is in use" errors.

Boot into safe mode & copy the contents.

Hope this helps

263197 2004-08-19 08:48:00 Still will not give a useable image of the drive to copy back.

You need to use proper "drive imaging" software to get a fully restored, bootable drive after a crash. Nortons Ghost or similar.

Ghost is very icky if you ask me.

Goto the 'usual places' and find the 'free' floppy version of Ghost, I like that, but the price is not justified.

263200 2004-08-19 09:32:00 Rather than promoting Warez, why not promote Knoppix and the free PartImage (http://partimage.sf.net) which will do the same job :-)

Chill.

263201 2004-08-19 09:35:00 Sorry, that should be:
Knoppix (www.knopper.net)
And the free:
PartImage (http://partimage.org)

263202 2004-08-19 09:43:00 Promoting warez? Pfft. I didn't even say the word!

Then again, I like Knoppix.

Okay then, in a more legal move, just do a Google search for 'shadow backup'

OR, spend lots of dosh and get yourself a RAID config :)

*IDEA* why not use the Windows Backup Tool? It will create a nice drive backup. Plus, it shadows.

Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Backup

Just select the entire drive & have the .bkf file saved to the Ext HD.

Yes there is.
"Hidden deep in the recesses of the Windows XP Home Edition CD lies the actual installation program that you need to put the Backup Utility on your computer"...
