263502 2004-08-24 10:00:00 Hi tommy,

I tried looking in disk management and it showed in top window:

C: partition basic NTFS healthy (system) 39.06Gig 37.0gig free...

also shows my CD drive on second line as partition basic etc.

The three lower boxes show:

C: NTFS 39.06 Gig, 37.05Gig unallocated, CD (D:) 142Mb

C and D are listed as primary partitions

The second one is the partition I want to format but when i right click on it I only get drop down options of partition, properties and help... no format option.

I think I'm lost with that one.

I will take the new stick of ram out along with the original one and trot off to DSE, see what they say... I had the feeling that the guy there didn't know much more than me (which is not a lot!)

Your D: drive is only 142MB which would be why you cannot format it. As your C: drive is 39.06GB + 37.05GB = 76.11GB it appears that you may have made that partition too large as it is virtually all of your hard drive.
Unfortunately you will need to start over again - removing your existing partitions, repartitioning your hard drive, formatting and reinstalling Windows once more, if you wish to have more than one partition, unless you have the Partition Magic program which can repartition without destroying your data.
Personally I believe it would be worth the trouble having more than one partition but it is your choice whether you wish to start all over again. A good partition size to install Windows on would be 10GB with the remaining space divided up as you wished, eg two 35GB (approx.) partitions or three smaller ones, depending on how many programs and how much data you have and how you wish to store it.
If you wish to start again and would like more detailed instructions on partitioning and formatting let me know and I will try and find a good site to refer you to.

263504 2004-08-26 03:30:00 Hi tommy,

fixed the problem with the ram... when i went to take the old stick out to show DSE I found out that you have to be 'brutal' pushing it in so that the clips fit. Now works great, shows as 512mb and the computer is fast :-)

yes, thought i might have stuffed up the parition/format. I've downloaded randon partition prog so will give that a go... if that fails I can reinstall winxp as I haven't gone too far to make it a problem... i also printed off the FAQ for partitoning and installing multi OS, clear as mud so far.

Thanks for all your help!
Joe

263505 2004-08-26 04:45:00 Glad to hear that you solved your RAM problem. Yes, you do have to be quite firm with it. I did wonder whether you might not have pushed it in far enough but was uncertain whether you had the right size or not.
Good luck with the partitioning.
