This raises an interesting question. I bought my computer at a well known retailer and I did not get a windows XP disc with it. When I questioned them they told me something about an OEM agreement with microsoft and I do not get a disk. They said if anything goes wrong I should get back to them. I also have an extended warranty on the machine so are they right or have I been had ???

263207 2004-08-20 09:52:00 Not getting a CD sounds kinda suspect. I read somewhere on MS's site that if you were not provided with a installation disc, to contact their piracy division.

Who did you purchase from?

263208 2004-08-20 11:04:00 Its quite legit to have OEM versions installed to the HDD and a CD key sticker on the case of the PC. No media is not uncommon. godfather (25)
263209 2004-08-20 14:03:00 I'd check that the sticker is on the side of the PC.... And that it says "Windows XP Home OEM Edition".

Its not a bad idea for the retailer to keep the Disc, as it promotes Goodwill because the customer has to return to you to get it re-formatted ;-)

Well for SOME values of "bad". it's "not a bad idea". :)
But I would have to slightly disagree with your interpretation of goodwill.
A return trip to the store neccesitated by theft on the part of the retailer might be stretching the definition a bit. I suppose, with enough customers infuriated at any given time it could mean a "Good" chance that the retailer's "Will" is about to be read.
Still, for the furniture / appliance / computer dealers, it is about par for the course.
I should be asleep :D

The only CABS folder I can find is C:\ Program Files\Office update.
A search for CABS reveals a lot of CAB files and the only two executable files are
Makecab.exe and Cabdir.exe. No sign of anything that lookes like backup.

263212 2004-08-21 03:54:00 Hidden partition on the hard drive?

Thats what many such as HP use, so you will not find it that easy.

Not sure what system you have so without any make and model any research is stifled.

263213 2004-08-21 04:47:00 Hi Heaton, just a side thought, as, as GF said, without knowing what brand etc... its a little hard to comment - but for instance if its a Compaq (mother just brought one, without discs etc...) theres a built in backup program in the programs which lets you create your own Backup discs onto cds (actually Ghosts the system so they told me when i phoned) - if you have this kind of setup i wonder if you can ghost it over to the hdd instead of onto cds?? maybe by directing it to the other hdd instead of the cd drive...
May be an option??

System is Windows XP home edition. Computer is a Packard Bell NEC P2001268H2
Purchased from Harvey Norman couple of years ago. If I can't find it I will be going back to them. Found them pretty good to deal with and got to know their technical bloke quite well and we have an amicable business relationship.
