264477 2004-08-23 00:03:00 Anyone else notice this today? Go to the NZ Herald website (www.nzherald.co.nz) and view some of the NZ News pages. Where there are the Lotto Investment/BigByte adverts on the right side you should notice your CPU going up to 100%.

Other pages without the three adverts seem to work fine.

Anyone else having the same problem like me?

264480 2004-08-23 00:18:00 I'm on W2K Pro and viewing with Firefox 0.9.2. I verified having the same constant 100% CPU usage on IE6 as well so it is not browser related.

Try this page and check your CPU usage.

oh, yes, I did get 85 - 99% - 100% Cpu usage :( I wonder if it is the lotto ad or the bigbite ad?

This is with Firefox 0.9.2 on Win XP SP2 RC 2

264482 2004-08-23 01:02:00 Must be Lotto using my CPU to calculate all the profit they made over the weekend. ;) nzStan (440)
264483 2004-08-23 01:21:00 Barely got to 18% but once I had cleared my cache and disabled adblock it got up to 50%.

I sent complaint email to the Herald last week regarding their advertising particularly when it refreshes it has a tendency to open in a new window if you don't have the right elements blocked. I left it open and unblocked to see what would happen, the result was about 20 ad windows open in 10 minutes.

Needless to say I have not received a reply from the Herald or the irresponsible webmaster. I would encourage all of you who find this site problematical to send a polite email the editorial section and/or use the feedback facility and/or the webmaster. Obviously they have an inconsiderate ,arrogant git in charge of their website and/or marketing who cannot be bothered to realise that people will stop visiting or block the ads.

One question, if every time the ads refresh and open in a new window does this give them a new page hit which would in turn provide them with false evidence that the ads were being viewed and therefore meeting the needs of the advertiser? Funny thing is I remember the annoying Flash but don't remember the suckers who have paid for it, so, good advert for SWFlash bad for the client :^O maybe a direct response to the advertiser would help as well but you would need to make it clear you had to search out the name in order to complain.

Maybe you need to higher up the corporate chain.... mind you, they still wouldn't answer. They expect to get a few complaints about things like that. Hopefully the ad is provided by another resource... so just block access to it.

264485 2004-08-23 01:48:00 Using Firefox 0.9.3 with the flash blocker installed, had no problems until I clicked the play button to view the flash adds then CPU usage jumped to 99%.

My recommendation: Install the flash blocker for Firefox from here (http://flashblock.mozdev.org/)

264486 2004-08-23 01:55:00 OK it looks like the ads are from http://ads.whi.co.nz (based on checking through the source codes).

How do I filter them in Firefox? These are not pop ups.

A pity tho if I have to filter all ads. Some ads are Ok and I quite like to see them but not at the expense of using up all my CPU time.
