264135 2004-08-22 02:41:00 Afternoon all. Last week I opened an e-mail that I probably shouldn't have, and my machine went to pieces. In short, every time I connected to the Internet some virus started downloading and installing horrible things on my machine.
Anyway, I think I solved that problem with a earlier Restore Point.

The language was foul, I can assure you!

I think I'm back to normal, BUT now having problems shutting down the PC when I'm finished.

It used to be very simple, as I'm sure we all do:

- Start
- Turn Off Computer
- Turn Off

And ten seconds later it's gone.

Now, I'm having to do the following:

- Start
- Turn Off Computer
- Stand By.....

Nothing, so click on the mouse, then:

- Turn Off Computer
- Turn Off, (then a pop-up box with):

"Other People are Logged on to this computer. Shutting down Windows might cause them to lose data. Do you want to Shutdown?"

- Yes

Then PC shuts down.

HELP! How to I get back my three clicks and it's goodnight?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Tim

264136 2004-08-22 02:53:00 An earlier restore point may have fixed some of the problems, but not any nasties that had installed, they will still be there.

You need to do the works I believe.

Stinger.exe (download free from McAfee.com) would be a starting point.

It suggests that another application may have some background control.

264137 2004-08-22 03:03:00 I would go here first and do a scan

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

See what comes up. Standby doesnt shut down a PC. It puts it in standby. Umm, I would also go to run and type msconfig. See whats running under startup. paste whats running back here. I take it you're running XP?

264138 2004-08-22 22:07:00 Thanks guys. I went to McAfee but couldn't find anything called Stinger.

I downloaded and ran their FreeScan which found diddly-squat.

Spybot used to find plenty after I had connected to the 'net for about three minutes, but after it had cleared everything the problem still remains.

I'm aware Standby doesn't shut down the PC, but I have to do that first to make it shutdown. Simply clicking on the Turn Off Computer button doesn't work.

Yeah, I'm running XP. I'll try the msconfig tonight, and paste here. Problem compounded by the fact I'm not PC-savvy enough to understand most of what I'll see.....

Jeez, give me five minutes in a dark alley with the anal-retentive that did this to my beloved machine!

264139 2004-08-22 22:49:00 You should find Stinger (vil.nai.com) here.

264140 2004-08-23 06:35:00 Guys, I've run Stinger. Nothing seems to have happened...

I've looked in MSCONFIG, but it's all gobbledegook to me. I looked under "Startup", and there are two files with the check box ticked that don't have C/: Windows etc as part of their file name. They are:

CTHELPER.exe
REGSVR.32.exe

These mean nothing to me, do they mean anything to anyone out there???

Cheers

264141 2004-08-23 07:45:00 First turn off system restore (sal.neoburn.net) scan with spybot 1.3, adawareSE 1.03 and your virus checker with the latest definations of all these programs.

Right click on the desktop and make sure there is no web content (sal.neoburn.net) on your or anyone elses desktop.

264142 2004-08-23 08:09:00 Also, disable remote console (under system configuration, press Windows-Break), and disable file and print sharing. Download a program called Tcpview, it should tell you all the connections to your computer, and to which program on your computer (based on the net.exe stat command). Growly (6)
264143 2004-08-25 23:05:00 Guys, thanks for your help but I've given up and I'm going to take it to Quay Computers to see if they can get my baby back to it's former glory.

Anybody care to make an educated guess as to how much I could reasonably expect to pay for this service? I have no idea how long this could take, or what it could cost, so a few thoughts before I go down that road would be appreciated.

Cheers

264144 2004-08-25 23:15:00 Umm, nope wouldnt have a clue. BUT i dont think that regserv32 thing is meant to be in startup in msconfig. Try unticking then reboot then see if something works.

It looks like CThelper is part of some creative driver u have.
