264577 2004-08-23 10:14:00 Hi there, anyone bought a Dell pc lately - just trying to find out whether they come with any recovery disks, or are these all on the hard drive.
I get a few people asking, but I'm not sure & the website doesn't say so. I'm sure the Warehouse ones are on the HD. I do know HP have them on the HD - partitioned. Thanks.

264578 2004-08-23 10:25:00 Were there any CDS that came with the computer? If so, have a flick through them and see if you can find the restore one. My friend's Dell came with them. Megaman (344)
264579 2004-08-23 10:35:00 Thanks for your reply. What's happening is I'm getting people asking me whether it's a good idea buying Dell - I say maybe, but I wasn't sure whether they come with any Windows XP disks or is it on a partitioned HD like HP. Is your friend's Dell a new one ordered online & definitely has a recovery disk & not just the ones for the modem or cd-writer etc?. Thanks. xtraka (1984)
264580 2004-08-23 10:45:00 A good idea to buy a dell?

It would be better to write up a list of pro's and cons, when your finished the answer will be obvious, and the Prolist will have one entry...Price,and price alone.

Thats an important consideration to a lot of people Metla.... And the biggest proportion of computer buyers only want to use it for emails, chatting online, web surfing and maybe a little downloading and simple game play.
I wouldn't dis the Dell. I think in general terms its a pretty good computer.

264583 2004-08-23 11:35:00 I never said price wasn't a major consideration, just that price was all that a Dell has going for it.

And in that regard a 400 dollar second hand computer can do everything that a 999 dell can, probally better as they generally don't reliey on software running in order for the drive to detect a cd has been inserted.

264585 2004-08-23 11:53:00 Hi all
this isn't about whether Dell pcs are any good etc, just wanted to confirm that they do in fact have recovery disks or everything's on the HD. Thanks

264586 2004-08-23 12:00:00 dells ex red shed are a good package for what they are. for our needs (medium word processing, cd burning, some games, although not the latest and greatest ones)it performs perfectly adequately. Occasionally I do notice the absence of the extra 256MB recommended as hitting the "sweet spot" for Win XP, but this is not often enough an issue to justify getting overheated about it. In spite of all the snobbery evident on this forum towards them, they perform all the functions that an entry-level computer buyer would require-our one serves us just fine and it's only the fact that I'm now doing a computer course and learning about more things that causes me to look slightly down my nose at it, i.e. if I didn't know what I was missing, it wouldn't be an issue-indeed to the average entry-level buyer these additional capabilities wouldn't even come in to it. by all means, recommend them, although the pricing may need to change to remain competitive-i.e. when we bought this unit 12/03, the pricing for the specs was quite far out in front of what else the market was offering, however 8 months down the track, still offering the same package for the same price, the pricing advantage has largely disappeared when other options now in the market are examined. excellent after-sales service too, as can be verified by examining my earlier thread re malfunctioning CD-RW drive.

cheers
