264648 2004-09-10 05:24:00 oops!

264649 2004-09-10 05:26:00 If that is a proper fx5200 video card then it will run the Sims 2 just fine, the only advert i have seen for the comps had it listed as the fx5200 GO chipset which is a lesser laptop variant i presumed they had manufactured as an AGP card.

Maybe it was a typo.

Overall, decent machine at a good price, although i would want to bench one before i gave it the thumbs up.

264650 2004-09-10 05:34:00 sorry melta
the typo was mine, it does read
128 MB DDR nVida GeForce FX Go 5200 Graphics card
just done a quick check no more typos on my part.
I had to type the specs in as they arrived in pdf and I couldn't do a cut and paste.
Can you tell me your reservations on the 'Go' card? From a layman's point of view?
Many thanks

264651 2004-09-10 05:40:00 I've had a go at both QMB and Dragon PC using there basic packages to built a box but they have changed since I last used it (both use the same system), I can delet but not add components. Could be the fact I'm not using IE, I'll give it a go building one up from individual parts but that usually works out more expensive.

What I can say, is that for a basic system of similar spec's is about $900- without software.

264652 2004-09-10 05:44:00 In order to conserve heat and power consumption laptops use components that are crippled performance wise compared to the desktop equilivents, the stock standard fx5200 is a very low performance card to begin with and the GO chip is even worse.

The fact that they would use a varient of a laptop chipset in a desktop is just getting redicules as far as cutting costs is concerned, and that same standerd would be reflected by every item in the machine.

Im sorry,i would give that Comp the thumbs down, and believe me i tried really hard not to dismiss it purely because its a dell.

You know i can get brand new motherboards for $38 bucks, cases for $33,...256mb ddr400 for $40 bucks i stick....would i ever use these items?....Hell no.

Yes, excellent point. Fact is you can get a much better deal for your money than that Dell one. 256mb of RAM running XP Home is laughable.

I'm not sure why people want to buy CRTs for general home use in this day and age either. LCDs are much better in every respect and worth any added costs.

Dunedin has lots of computer specialists (apart from the few on PriceSpy) but many of them are small-time without big ads.
I've only needed paid technical help once - shortly after I got my computer - but can definitely recommend this small firm that gave me great service at reasonable cost.
They are Ace Computers, 7 Bond St Phone 477-1090. You'll find them in the Yellow Pages under Computer Hardware.
Their base is a small crowded workshop on the ground floor of the giant Consultancy House. Only a small sign shows they're there, and I wouldn't have known of them except for a recommendation from my neighbour.
Nice guy Tom fixed my problem, answered my questions & even let me watch him at work (novice owner/nosey journalist wanted to see what was actually inside that big box)
I'll certainly be contacting them again if I need a tech - which is the best recommendation I can give.
Why not try them for a quote - though I doubt they're open on weekends?
(I'd say:"Tell them I sent you - except that the name Laura wouldn't ring any bells there)
