264587 2004-08-23 12:12:00 At the end of the day you get what you pay for and if something is cheaper then there is usually a reason for it - lower spec components, home-version software, no service, no warranty etc. andrew93 (249)
264588 2004-08-23 12:14:00 Never looked at it from that perspective, well said icyred Rob99 (151)
264589 2004-08-23 13:21:00 I bought a Dell Dimension 4600 from the Warehouse. It came with 9 CDs. OS, Diagnostics, MS Works, Hardware drivers, Aplications etc. I find it to be a good deal. The only problems I have had are due to my being unfamiliar with XP.
It came with higher specs than the same model on Dells website and several hundred dollars cheaper to. Vince

264590 2004-08-23 13:25:00 Just read this thread from top to bottom.
Lots of interesting stuff.
But nobody has answered xtraka's question- DO THEY COME WITH ANY RECOVERY DISKS, or are all these on the hard drive.?
He has asked it twice in the thread.
Anyone got an answer to the original question?

264592 2004-08-23 13:46:00 Did you see the Dell Recovery link & Vinces post Laura?

264593 2004-08-23 14:03:00 OK I grovel, guys.

Murray: No, I didn't follow your link. I gather from your more recent post it would've answered the question. Mine was a quick overview, I'm sorry.

Vince: You posted yours while I was writing mine. I can type faster occasionally, but not while watching the Olympics at the same time...

I do hope the answers will solve the problem. I hope he'll let us know.

264594 2004-08-23 18:12:00 First question to ask before buying any computer.
" Does it come with an untouched O/S. Retail version?
If it doesn't don't even consider it.

264595 2004-08-24 01:07:00 To all who answered - thanks very much. I guess the answer is that Dell does supply disks - to Vince - you say a an OS disk - is that a recovery disk or actual XP disk?
I saw the Warehouse' ad for PCs - is yours the $999 or the more expensive one. I thought that the $999 came with no OS disk. Anyone else bought a Dell online recently (like this month?)
Sorry to be so pendantic, everyone - I'm just trying to get the facts right.
I actually emailed Dell, but got no reply so far. Maybe they know I'm a pc builder! Thanks

264596 2004-08-24 02:04:00 The Warehouse can offer computers at that price because they don't buy one at a time from Dell; they get containers of them. That affects the price they pay. That's why a supermarket can sell cans of catfood at less than the "corner shop" can buy them for ... and still make a profit. Graham L (2)
