264677 2004-09-11 00:15:00 MarkC. If you buy a second hand PC from me it will come with lots of disks. Including the OS. When selling my old PC's I get rid of all the old disks I have cluttering up my desk.
What about the way Dell's are advertised. No mention of the fact there's no floppy drive. To me an essentil part of a comp.
They say Windows preinstalled. No mention of no disk with it.
And what about their fancy delivery price. You pay freight from Malaysia.
I don't know what their on-site repair service is like, but I suspect it's at least ,dubious.
And what if the repair is too much to do on site? Is it sent back to Malaysia?

264678 2004-09-11 00:21:00 They have technicians contracted to service the machines within NZ. metla (154)
264679 2004-09-11 00:28:00 But how good are they. The title "technitian" is very loose.

264680 2004-09-11 00:53:00 one of the local places i know had a dead hardrive in a dell. the dell tech drove the hour long drive up here to replaced it free of charge. beats those "return to base" warranties. tech seamed to do an ok job. tweak'e (174)
264681 2004-09-11 01:20:00 I peronally do not like the recovery partition on the drive. It's just a bad penny pinching idea when you consider the cost of an additional CD to contain the actual OS rather than setup files. It also borders on, or is, false advertising to say that the machine comes with a 40GB of storage, no it doesn't, not for your use anyway which is what is implied because a big chunck is already carved off it and inaccessable to the user.

I would not rely on any current store bought PC being the same spec's as Vinces (for eg) or even having the same motherboard even if the model number is the same. To keep production up to target the will swap in available parts as necessary rather than stop a run because one or two components are in short supply or the miscalcualted demand, although, your more likely to get say, a 60GB drive rather than a 40GB one with 20GB carved off it than the opposite. So one persons experience with what they can upgrade may differ vastly from anothers.

My 2 cents

264682 2004-09-11 02:17:00 As for the Tech's, Dell requires a minimum qualification of A+ before they can do warranty work on their PC's. It is all contracted out.

I personally do not like "Brand name" computers either, but it is a case of horses for courses and they have their place in the market.

As for proprietary components, Dell would be amongst the best. Just had a look inside a Dell tower, and the power supply is a standard off the shelf ATX. All other parts inside look replaceable, by standard components, unlike the Compaq's.

264683 2004-09-11 05:17:00 just to add to pheonix.....some and only some dells have proprietary motherboards. they won't fit normall cases.

the worse thing i find is people like to buy tiny pc's, without realising they use non-standard parts, which are a pain to fix or upgrade.

264684 2004-09-11 12:00:00 :) Just to clear up a point, The Dell that I bought for $1399.00 in april is different in some ways to the $1299.00 model they are selling now. Mine has an 80GB hard drive and the video card does not have the GO chipset, at least there is no mention of the "GO" in Device Manager, or System Information. :D Vince (406)
