| 264667 | 2004-09-10 13:56:00 | Sorry to hear about the flue Megan. An annual flue vaccination will save you from more sick days than you would expect. I bought the extra ram before I had a chance to get a feel for the computers speed, based on experience with my old one I knew it was a good idea. I'm afraid I don't play any high end games so I cant tell you how it handles them. I currently have 12 programs running, 6 web pages open, using The Gimp to clean up an 1879 x 2622 pixel image file and 56 processes. MusicMatch is playing Leonard Cohen MP3s. Well after all that I see no sign of slowness So I guess the extra ram works; I've still got 325 MB free. It has 4 RAM slots 2 free. I think the one the Warehouse is selling now may not be an exact match with mine, would explain it's being $100.00 cheaper. As far as I can tell my graphics card does not have the GO chipset. |

Have read previous books by the same author. > I have a friend with a Dell, unfortunately, he > enjoyed his computer intitiation, and wanted to > upgrade - oh darn ! In spite of my comments before > he bought it, I suspect he blames me for not forcibly > preventing him buying the thing. Unfortunately names like Dell, HP, IBM, Acer and various other brand names don't actually belong in the same sentence along with upgrade and certainly not with cheap or inexpensive. Please note that I have nothing against these brand names. If it works then use it. |

| 264670 | 2004-09-10 20:58:00 | This is the 93rd post to this thread. WHY, WHY, WHY ??? As far as I am coincerned Dell is a dirty word. Not used in polite company. Anyone who buys one deserves all the trouble he will get. If you have a Dell there is only one solution. Put it in your car and drive out to the Tip and throw it as far as you can. Troubles over. Next problem, Where do I get the money to buy a computer? Jack |

| 264671 | 2004-09-10 21:16:00 | >If Dell (or HP or Packard Bell et al) were so bad, why do they hold such a market share? Ignorance. All the ones I have struck have been very poorly set up and have ended up with viruses or other problems in a very short time. |

| 264672 | 2004-09-10 23:22:00 | About time some more with clear vision showed up in this thread. So far the debate for Dell. >>Market Share Thats not a point, thats marketing,if 10 million people bought a pigs ear that doesn't make it a silk purse, even if they managed to stow their coins in it.A spade is still a spade no matter what angle you view it from. >>Get one for Granny. Heh?...I've sold a number of computers to the elderly,They are all much better off not owning a Dell,....Just like the rest of the population. The con's of a Dell or other brand name comp don't disapear because the owner has silver hair. >>Gamers should get a life. Cheap shot and more then a redicules statement. The Pro Dell camp is lookin more then a little weak at the moment. |

| 264673 | 2004-09-10 23:42:00 | i dislike supermarket pc's myself but they do have there use's. provided you use em as they are and your not intending to upgrade then they go ok. most have a decent warranty (dell's onsite warranty would be one of the best ever) which is something a lot of customers really go for. > All the ones I have struck have been very poorly set up and have ended up with viruses...... i have struck very few poorly setup ones. most of been ok. the only downside has been limited or no antivirus, which is easly fixed. supermarket pc's are still far better than the elcheapo custom built crap being sold. i have had more problems with poorly built custom built pc's than brand name pc's. as long as you know the drawbacks of supermarket pc's, for the price, they are quite ok and far better than the cheap custom built crap. |

Retail > version? > If it doesn't don't even consider it. > Jack Too right. It's about time us consumers stopped getting ripped off on this. There are a hell of alot of novice pc users out there who don't know what they're buying and getting ripped, only to realise maybe a year later that when they want to reinstall everything the way they want to, they can't cos they don't have the OS disk. I hate the practice of making a recovery partition - it's such a waste of valuable hard drive space. |

| 264675 | 2004-09-10 23:53:00 | > " Does it come with an untouched O/S whats wrong with a modded O/S ??? they have a lot of the patches installed and fix a lot of the MS bullsups (eg messager service) so when the newbie does a reinstall they don't get done by virus's spam etc. i noticed a few new dell's came out with XP oem disks rather than the usual restore disk which was a nice change. |

| 264676 | 2004-09-10 23:55:00 | It's all a bit like second hand cars. You're unlikely to find the owner's manual and the original toolkit when you buy 2nd hand and with comps you're most unlikely to get any discs with it. You buy a 2nd hand comp, it's got an OS on it. No-one ever wonders who 'owns' the OS, no-one ever wants a comp without an OS on it. In my experience no-one ever expects any less or any more. It's one of the paradoxes of computing that technically the OS should be romved before selling the comp, because you've only paid for a licence to use the OS, it's not yours to resell, and yet everybody does it and no-one does anything about it. Shall keep quiet about it now. :| |
