265349 2004-08-25 12:04:00 I have a 486 with a 250 mb hdd and 8mb ram. I have my own subdomain hosted with no-ip (www.no-ip.com). I have another server running sme linux as my mail/web/ftp server. I would like to make the 486 a backup smtp server as I have to host my own mx records. I want to create another account with no ip as a backup mx-record to my main domain. No ip produces a linux update client. I know very little about linux (why i am using sme server) but linux is the only os i can run on this configuration. cisconz (6073)

Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

If both machines are located at the same place, using the same dynamic IP, if your connection goes down, then your secondary box would also be unavailable so it wouldn't be able to act as a back-up mail server unless it was physically located on another reliable internet connection.

265351 2004-08-26 03:31:00 That is the point. I want to send this to my cousins office in wellington (I am in auckland). Therefore the likelihood of both of the servers going down is remote as we are with different isp's and I have jet stream and they have cable cisconz (6073)

Cable has a static IP address, so you don't need a second no-ip account as the IP address will not change.

Setup something like mail2.yourdomain.co.nz with an A record pointing to the cable IP address, then just add a second MX record in pointing to mail2.yourdomain.co.nz

Obviously the machine will need port 25 set up on the router in Wellington mapped to it to handle the SMTP traffic, and you'll need to set up a nice way or releasing the messages from the backup server (ETRN) or somthing similar to return mail to your primary server when your connection comes back up.

265353 2004-08-26 03:57:00 I do need no-ip because they don't have a domain and I'm to cheap to pay for one to be hosted down their line.
What i meant was can someone give me a configuration that i can put on this 486 (os and software) that would serve as the backup server?

Ah right, I didn't realise you were setting up a secondary mail server for a no-ip.com domain... but hey whatever.

Basically you want the same configuration you have now, put on a *nix OS and basic mail handling software on the machine - essentially replicate what you have now.

As far as retrieving the mail, you can either pop both your server and the backup server, or set it up as an ETRN box (or similar)

ETRN Guide: www.postfix.org

Without trying to be needlessly harsh, if you don't know how to set this up you probably shouldn't be doing it. If the mail server is compromised as a spam relay etc you (or whoever is hosting the box) could be looking at huge bandwidth costs etc.

265355 2004-08-26 04:25:00 I know exactly what you mean.
I used to sue MDaemon but i don't have the resources in this 486 to run that. Basically all I want is an smtp listener (not sending server) and either ETRN or pop access (therefore eliminating the problem of spam being relayed
