265075 2004-08-25 01:35:00 I want to get a new chipset cooler for my GeForce FX 5600 video card. The video RAM has no heatsinks on it so I was wondering if I could use a GeForce 4 chipset cooler on it instead of the monsterous GeForce FX/ATI Radeon coolers that cover both sides of the card.

I'm looking at using ThermalTake gear as I can get it relatively cheap.

Anyone know if this will work?

Thanks,
Wintertide

265076 2004-08-25 01:41:00 Why not just buy BGA ram sinks?

No the ram not the gpu.

Is the card running hot (more specifically is the ram) or are you going to overclock it? Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

265079 2004-08-25 01:52:00 Yeah - in that case BGA ramsinks are cheap as chips. $16 I think.

265080 2004-08-25 02:02:00 The card cooler that's currently on it looks cheap & nasty and it's real noisy too.

The card doesn't seem to be running hot and I may overclock in the future but I haven't had much luck with overclocking on my board so I probably will leave it at stock speeds.

265081 2004-08-25 02:12:00 What Thermaltake GF4 cooler in particular are you planning on using? Something like this (www.thermaltake.com) perhaps?

You could consider the Giant 2 it would be more than enough to cool a FX5600, i have found if you mod it a lil and put the big plate on the top of the card and the lil plate on the GPU it cools better. THis way you have a bigger area to dissapate the heat through.

265082 2004-08-25 04:18:00 how much cheaper can you get Thermaltake stuff because in all the reviews i red of this: www.ascent.co.nz it got a 10/10. It comes with ram sinks. Ascent has free delivering.

there are some review links from here:

265083 2004-08-25 04:20:00 Yep, that's the GeForce 4 cooler that I'm looking at getting... I don't want to get the ThermalTake Giant 2 because it's just too big and it seems like an overkill. I would have quoted the names of the ThermalTake coolers but I didn't have them in front of me at the time of the post. wintertide (1306)
265084 2004-08-25 04:24:00 Well, I can get the GeForce 4 cooler for around $25 and the Giant 2 for around $45 (both prices with GST included)

Ahh, the benefits of working for a computer place with supplier accounts... :D
