| 1369024 | 2014-02-28 22:59:00 | Do you have a list of jobs you do when you set up a new Laptop with Windows 8.1 ? I/m thinking of things like turning on or off Security items. Installing a Browser etc. Network settings I have a list for my Windows 7 desktops, but it needs updating. |

You'll have to install something else. Just go through PC settings and disable what you dont want. And all I did was configure the network stuff, like I did with Win7 |

| 1369028 | 2014-03-01 00:24:00 | Well for me; Set it to boot to the desktop Set it to return to the desktop when I close something Associate pictures/videos/music files with the desktop applications I like to use (the metro ones are ok but I don't like them as default) Set all the start screen tiles how I like them, group them and name the groups Install firefox - never used to bother and I like IE11 just fine but I've come to rely on a few of the plug-ins available for FF. Install an e-mail client - live mail lately. The inbuilt "metro" Email client is ok but I prefer a desktop program (I have a 27" monitor and the giant text and simplified screen do nothing for me) Install all my software (Steam, games, office equivalent, etc) Create a backup image once done and file it somewhere Saying you can't install MSE might be a bit misleading, windows defender which is already installed provides exactly the same functionality, unlike windows 7 where defender and MSE are two different programs. They basically just renamed MSE to Defender and included in with windows 8. |

| 1369029 | 2014-03-01 00:25:00 | Very first thing is remove what ever crap trial AV program is installed. ( if its a name brand Computer) Next run all windows updates Install the following programs: A DVD media Player, since W8/8.1 doesn't have one any more, WMP wont play DVD's. I install MPC (http://mpc-hc.org/) - Its free and works well with a truck load of options. Ccleaner Depending on if a person wants a different browser, either Iron or FF. If either of those install flash. Some sort of Office program, either MS office or kingsoft Office if people want Free versions. Nod32 Antivirus either a previous licence the person had or new if they want, min of a Trial. PDF Reader -- nitro Free version does most people, then change the file associations so its the default. Generally ask if the person wants to view pictures in the App or the older style windows photo viewer, and change as they want. Change the Media player to be default for music. Install Itunes if they want it. Install MS Essentials, and use Windows Live mail or what ever other mail program requested. If the person wants any other programs, install those, sort out if they want 8.1 to boot to desktop or start screen. Setup desktop Skype if they want that. When taken back tech how to use the tiles, how to navigate around 8.1, do what they would normally do day to day ( setup icons) Then ask or tech anything in the usage they are not sure about. Thats about it off the top of my head :p Thats why most people I tech with 8/ 8.1 - cant see the problems others complain about, they are helped to use it, setup the way they like it and are happy with the usage. ;) |

| 1369031 | 2014-03-01 01:10:00 | W8 /8.1 does have WMP, BUT it wont play DVD's like previous versions of WMP did. The reason given from MS (Article says it better than I could write - and I'm to lazy to type it all out ) :p Because the software technology for playing these disks isn’t free — Microsoft previously paid $2 for every copy of Windows sold, just for the right to use the patented technology needed to play DVDs . Considering the ever-increasing number of devices without optical drives, Microsoft decided it wasn’t worth paying for features many people can’t even use. BUT if you PAY for Windows Media Center then you can, but you HAVE to have the Pro version, the standard version wont take it. Or use one of the many free players that play fine, Eg: MPC. |

These are movies off a Panasonic camera. |
