1368360 2014-02-21 07:26:00 Hey there,

I was wanting to re-install Win 8 on an HP laptop and they have moved to that stupid serial code inside the chip.
When I called for a different laptop last week, the guy said you can only install the exact version of Windows that was shipped with that chip, so there is no way to get it out?

I can boot up the machine, but I dont have Admin rights - is there any way I can download Windows 8 install it, and then get it to work with the serial number?
I have Win8 install DVD from HP for a different HP laptop, but I am assuming that probably will not be the right version for that chip?

Fricken driving me nuts these HP licencing things! And Microsoft wont / cant help without a licence key either..
Any ideas? I have to drop fully installed machine tomorrow morning, and HP are shut.

1368362 2014-02-21 07:45:00 If the HDD is blank, all you should have to do is boot from the Windows 8 DVD, no product key required, since its on the chip, windows DVD reads the chip, it should detect what version of W8 The key belongs to and will install that version, you wont get prompted for a product key, rest of teh install is as normal.

Done a few now and all used the same DVD.

The HP DVD you have will more than likely be different to a standards W8 / 8.1 DVD.

1368363 2014-02-21 10:37:00 yeah it errors and says that Win 8 DVD is not compatible with that laptop.
Hey WainuiTech Do you reckon if I format the hard drive now then that might work? It kind of is a "no going back" strategy...

1368365 2014-02-21 21:38:00 The ones I have done had their hard Drives Wiped clean, removing all partitions. Two were new installs on the original Drives, once the 8.1 upgrade toasted the OS, and the other was installing a larger drive. They all worked fine.

What you can do is if you have another HDD, Doesn't matter what size, wipe that clean, and try it first on the drive, as long as it works OK on that drive it will work on the other. From Memory HP's may have a option to make recovery DVD's.

Just tried a Windows 8 Pro Key on a Windows 8 Standard DVD, and it accepted and would have installed Pro.

If the only DVD you have is a HP recovery DVD it may not work.

As before my best suggestion is to put in another Blank HDD first and try it before wiping the original.

What is wrong with the inbuilt Recovery Partition ? ( apart from removing all the HP Crap ) :) F11 from memory activates it when booting, then troubleshooting - after that theres options to recover.

1368366 2014-02-22 00:41:00 If you don't have a spare drive to try with, you could always image the entire drive sector-by-sector for a 1:1 image. Then if it fails, just rewrite the entire image back to the drive. Agent_24 (57)
