1350447 2013-08-02 04:28:00 We have got till 29th Sept to buy a digital TV. At present the Sony 42" model Full HD KDL42W800A is at the top of the list. What do others think, does anyone favour another 42"+/- make/model, and if so why? Also, where is the best place to buy in the Wellington City area?

All information gratefully received!

1350448 2013-08-02 06:33:00 We had good prices at LV Martins. We got our first Digital TV just recently :D We compared prices online ... LV Martins was the same so we used them b/c of their reputation and 14 day money back/change of mind. We saw 2 units instore at the Ngauranga branch that was less than advertised on their webpage. Of course a few were more than other stores ...

Just my biased view. I think that all the TVs from reputable brands are gonna be pretty similar to each other at the same similar price point +/- a $300, even if you go $500 diff they might just be features.

For us we didn't wanna spend $3000 or $5000 for it. We wanted 1080 b/c free to air TV does that.
For us it was down to a 42" LED dumb tv for $799.
We were going for a $1199 51" Dumb Plasma (LV Martins instore was $999) but due to the power savings the folks went for a $1499 Smart LED 51" which is said to save $120 in electricity per year. I still think maybe we shoulda got the $999 one. :D That's $500 in cold cash.

A few days ago, Noel Leeming was it had $799 mailout for a 51" Plasma.

We don't use Smart at all. We have configured it thou. The only feature that we use is the USB to playback holiday photo's for the family. Can you do that with dumb TV's or is that just Freeview recording

Oh - the USB only records Freeview, it doesn't record HDMI / AV Sky or what not ... Can't be played back on the computer either.

We didn't really care much about how it looked instore, pretty similar. We went for LG or Samsung. LG might be a bit more could be IMO, Sony is more. We wanna stick with Korean brands. Thing is in store they had a TV that was just 1024x768 and it was more than a full HD, haha, was a plasma but they showed cartoons to make it look better than the others  The others were playing Freeview could be, wasn't that sharp maybe wasn't even a 1080 channel or recorded TV. Then again, you get some $3000 ones and they show a Blue Ray movie or something  And then there were a $25,000 Ultra HD TV and they just showed professional shot photographs instead of video.

1350450 2013-08-02 07:33:00 By coincidence I just bought my first digital TV today - one of these (www.trademe.co.nz) - a Veon 37" LCD Full HD, for $399.00 with a 3 year warranty, from The Warehouse (www.thewarehouse.co.nz) RRP $799.00. (the sale ends 13th Aug).

Have no idea what it looks like when switched on! - just went for the price and needed something inexpensive real quick.

Actually, you have until then to either use Freeview or Sky.

The TV itself is irrelevant, it's quite possible to have either service on an old TV.
