Three-quarters of NZers live within something like 15km of coastline (and about 95% if you extend it to 50 - 60km), though, and it'd be a fairly safe bet almost all of those have *seen* the ocean, so the vast majority of NZers have, whereas a significant number of US residents may never have, certainly relative to the NZ numbers the % would be significantly higher. Some surveys (and of course surveys that are typically of a relatively small number and extrapolated out are not necessarily solid info) suggest that nearly a third of US residents have not...
