If you're going SLR find out what your friends have so you can borrow lenses, if you stick with Canon/Nikon you can't go far wrong. Something like a 650D/700D would be a good starter camera. I'm still pretty happy with my 550D, but could do with built in remote flash trigger, and GPS would have been handy when I did my Europe trip. Alex B (15479)

Love my EOS700d. After 20 years away from SLR's, it amazes me the progress that has been made. I have a Canon G1x as well. A compact with one or two faults as I am told by DPReview. It has a sensor 6 times larger than a normal compact and the quality of the image makes me overlook these minor faults. www.dpreview.com

1349875 2013-07-26 02:02:00 I'd love a G1x, something in the G series will hopefully be my next compact, but still the lack of GPS is annoying, heres hoping for the G16.....

Lens wise I have a Tamron 10-24, Canon 15-85, Nifty fifty, 17-55 and 55-250, Speedlite 430EXII. I may or may not have come down with a case of gear hording syndrome at one point.

Not as bad as my old flatmate who has 6-7 L series and from memory a 1D3.
