With that comes the implication of possible structural damage, and while minor cracking may be nothing, it could also be a harbinger of things to come. We have several large cracks in our walls as a result of the long dry summer here in Auckland, and doors were jamming etc, but the overnight appearance of major cracking should definitely ring caution bells, if not the alarm variety. Thats my point, they should be pulled down now, the very old bldings that have protection orders on them. They are death traps. That includes 100 year old houses, rotted to the core . |

That includes 100 year old houses, rotted to the core . Only modern houses 'rot to the core,' older houses were built using kauri, or in our case, heart rimu, both of which are rather more durable than modern softwoods. There are a lot of abandoned properties in the backblocks that are still standing, despite many decades of neglect. I saw a few up the Taieri Gorge recently. We used to hear the local colonies of borer sobbing pitifully late into the night as they failed to make any inroads at all on our wooden infra-structure. Their orthodontists bills must have been horrendous, and I guess they have now moved on to consume only modern structures with nice soft untreated timber. :D Cheers Billy 8-{) |
