Click Start
Run
type in:
cmd
Now, type:
ping main
ping 192.168.0.1
ping pressf1.co.nz
ping 210.48.100.45

Do this from Spare and Main and post back both results

Pinging Spare from Main and vice versa was successful.

Pinging pressf1 from Main was successful but timed out from Spare.

I tried pinging my ISP (ihug) from Main and Spare and was successful on Main but not always on Spare.

I then discovered that if I pinged either pressf1 or ihug from Main and then pinged them from Spare I was successful but I could still not connect to the internet from Spare.

266184 2004-08-28 06:19:00 Where on the spare one did u enter the info to get on the net??
Under Network /the name of the network card/TCPIP??

I take it both have the same workgroup?

and under the above its pointing to

192.168.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
And as previously said DNS server 192.168.0.1 or whatever ip the main PC is using.

266185 2004-08-28 06:27:00 If you want zonealarm to work. Goto options, or prefs and find this is the gateway and ICS. Tick it

I have now done this but ICS still won't work

266186 2004-08-28 06:37:00 copy and paste a pic of what u did on the 98 pc. So, we can see if you've put the info in the right place . Are you using SP2 as well now?? By the topic? Or did you post that in the wrong forum?

Also, copy and paste a pic of where u ticked ICS in XP/zonealarm.... if you can..

266187 2004-08-28 20:41:00 I have checked using a traffic meter and when Spare attempts to connect to the internet there is traffic on the LAN. So it appears that the problem is that when Spare tries to connect to the internet it logs onto the LAN ok but does not find the internet connection. I have not been able to work out how to give Spare the correct address.

Reading "Windows XP Inside Out" on page 895 it says this

"If you plan to use Internet Connection Sharing and you have an external DSL or cable modern, you’ll need to install two network adapters in the computer with the shared Internet connection. The DSL or cable modem connects directly to one network adapter and provides the Internet connection. Connect the second network adapter to the sarne hub as the other computers in your horne network.

If your cable or DSL modern is an internal device or if you plan to use a conventional dial-up modern rather than a broadband connection, you need to install only one net¬work adapter in the computer that will act as the Internet Connection Sharing host."

It appears from this that ICS only works with an internal modem and will not work with an external USB modem. Microsoft Network guide does not tell you this, it infers that ICS will work with any external modem.

It looks like I will have to shell out another $100 for an internal modem, at least I will then have a modem for each computer but will also need a firewall on Spare. Life is not meant to be easy.

Comments please?

You could, by the looks of it, also spend a total of $60 and buy a decent switch and a network card.

I do not recommend getting two modems. You cannot connect to the phone line at the same time, and a major benefit of JetStream is thus nullified.

Would it not be easier to share the connection from the MAIN computer as opposed to SPARE? Or have you already done that and I merely missed it...

266189 2004-08-29 00:16:00 the best way would be to get a network hub and an external ADSL router. (you can get ADSL routers with built in hubs but i'm not a fan of them). however cost may be a problem.

cheapest way is to use an internal ADSL modem

what sort of use does the 2nd pc get ? a free proxy might be the cheapest way around the problem.

This would also involve new cables as well so it certainly would be costly compared to the simple set up that I have now.

Anybody want a second hand USB modem?

What is a free proxy?

I used two dial modems before I got Jetsream and it worked alright - we just had to remember not to both go on the internet at the same time.

I am trying to set up ICS so that Spare can use the internet connection on Main.

(notice the > in front...hint hint)

have a look here (www.analogx.com) for a basic one.

a proxy is a bit like ICS, basicly does the same job. a lot of programs are cable of useing a proxy but you have to enter the details in each program (what a pain) which is why ICS is easier to use. if the 2nd pc is only useing basic stuff like web surfing and downloading then analogX proxy is fine. email possible but its little tricky to get to work.
