266870 2004-08-30 01:49:00 I have installed SP2 and was reminded of worries I had previously about various things asking for access to the net via Zone Alarm. Since loading SP2 I am getting a rash of applications claiming my attention. What are they and why do they want to establish a connection?
1/ System32.alg.exe
2/ Sys32\\/\/bem\\/\/MIADAP.exe
3/ MS office\office\1033\wfxmsrvr
4/ sys32\spoolsv5/ sys32\rundll
6/ sys32\msdtc
7/ " \vssvc
8/ " \dwwin
9/ " \svchost
10/ " \dllhost
11/ " \csrss
etc etc etc
I am sure that they are all OK (I think), but I am not sure. Does anyone know what they do?

266871 2004-08-30 01:51:00 any applications you are unsure about, google them and you'll get a raft of resources explaining their functions

266874 2004-08-30 10:31:00 I dont use ZA but this still should apply.
I only let a few programs I know use the internet connection eg.
Your internet browser
Internet Explorer is normaly : iexplorer.exe
Firefox should be : firefox.exe
Your email client
Outlook express normaly is : msimn.exe
Virus/spybot/ad-aware

And only a few others like my ftp program etc.
You may also want to allow the windows updater, but it is best if it asks you each time.

I know this didnt answer your question but HTH

266875 2004-08-30 13:27:00 Most of those will be because of services running that probably don't need to be, so things aren't much more secure.
eg no 3 I assume to be an office fax server.
