266541 2004-08-29 03:39:00 Some time recently I read about the average lifespan of an un-firewalled PC being 20 minutes on the net before it got infected or attacked-now I want to refer to this for my assignment, I can’t find where I saw it-has anybody else seen this, and if so, where was it ? Also, while I'm at it, did anybody else see the news item where it was recommended by some large American agency (can't remember who) not to use IE at all due to security risks-also would like this for assignment, but as above, can't remember where it was.

Cheers

266543 2004-08-29 03:57:00 Well its true if u have XP, and no patches for worms like blaster, or sasser, or for any of the vulnerabilities for XP. If you're patched, you'll last longer. Spacemannz (808)
266544 2004-08-29 04:59:00 i people,

I beg to differ here, I have Win ME for three years no updates no sp's no firewall, ok I did have AVG, Spybot S&D and ad-Aware.

In that time I had no viruses some spam but hey you can't have every thing.

I have now got win XP Pro same thing, no updates no sp's no firewall and only one (1) virus in twelve months.

I don't use IE or Outlook Express (only if it is very nessary) I run Opera only on the internet.

Thats my 2,5 or 10 cents worth.

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

266545 2004-08-29 05:34:00 merlin-nz.......you have a firewall running. either windows or router, which is the only thing stopping you from being infected withen minutes (going by the amount of worms trying to connect to me at the mo).

no offence anyone but often those who claim to be never infected often are infected, they just don't know it and happly trying to infect the rest of us :( however i have come accross a few who don't get infected simply because they are very rarly ever on the net, don't go to any "fun" sites, don't have kids useing the pc, practise safe email and are on dailup.

266546 2004-08-29 05:50:00 yeh I cannot believe that xp without a firewall would last more than hour..........I stupidly put my newly built xp pc online lol without the firewall and it took about 30 seconds to catch netsky - or was it blaster ? anyway it was FAST drcspy (146)
266547 2004-08-29 06:06:00 The most recent reference I recall was in a mailer from Nick Bolton - Mailwasher. I didn't keep the email but try Mailwasher Click here (www.firetrust.com)

Came out of the "U.S. Dept of Defence" Close to the one about wheather you could really "afford" to use I.E .

Possibly "Mandrake" in their news posts. Was A genuine Art gave: names, quotes, and Admin possitions.

Search: Mandrake, Google, U.S. D.O.D. Should come up, if it doesent, post and I will see if I kept a copy.

266550 2004-08-29 06:35:00 I have a fully patched web server. How at risk is it if it only has port 80 open to the internet?
