267599 2004-08-31 22:28:00 Hi perhaps someone can give me some advice, please.

I want to set up a fairly basic Intranet for a small network of about 10 computers (XP Pro I think, I've yet to find out that one). I've done the web site on my home computer and it works fine - do I need some server software or can others share the site provided file sharing is on. I've tried it on the two networked computers (XP and 98 SE) here at home and can have the same site working at the same time on both OK, query - would that still work on a larger network or would I need some server software?

Hope that makes some sense. Ta

267600 2004-08-31 22:36:00 this might help.....simple server (www.analogx.com) tweak'e (174)
267601 2004-08-31 23:07:00 If you want to use the software that Microsoft supply, see here (www.webwizguide.com) CYaBro (73)
267602 2004-09-01 02:43:00 A network doesn't need "a server" .

Any computer on the network running a server application (such as Apache for http , a FTP server, etc) can provide that service to any computer on the network which has been given permission . Normally you would set up the server's configuration so that the whole network can use it .

If the network is attached to the Internet, and your security isn't correct, the services might be available to the whole networked world . :D

Dead easy to install (Download the .msi installer file for Windows) and just copy the files into the right folder.

If you have a PC that will be sharing the internet, I'd be inclined to put apache on that box, as it will always need to be on for the others to access it.

Otherwise you could look at investing upto a hundred bucks and get an old PC from Trademe, anything 486 upwards will work as a web server.

Chill.

267604 2004-09-01 03:48:00 Thanks for your help - what I wanted to do was set up the site on the present server on the network but wasn't sure whether or not I needed to have webserver software installed rather than just have users point to the index page with their browsers ie can several users share the same site without webserver software installed.

Had a look at the Simple Server WWW suggested by Tweak'e and that seems to be the answer anyway.

I don't need a bigger cruncher for just a simple little intranet.

If that makes sense - Ta

267605 2004-09-01 04:12:00 If your present one works for 2 other computers on the network, it will probably happily serve another hundred or so. You'll run out of network bandwidth before the web server croaks if it's even reasonably good. :-) Apache might be better ... but the one you've got works. Graham L (2)
