268244 2004-09-02 06:42:00 Would anyone able to give me some advice on how the create a bootable floppy disk that is suitable for formatting and installing DOS or Windows.
Also, does anyone know where I can download an "8 megabyte ramdisk", which I believe needs to be on the floppy.

Thanks,

(Well it's NOT the same DOS, as previous versions of Windows).

DOS 6.22 was 3 disks. I still have the disks here. You cant install DOS from just 1 floppy (I think). This DOS is bootable. YOu need to change the bootdisk in BIOS to the floppy. And follow the instructions.

Most Windows CD's are bootable. You go into the BIOS and change the bootdisk to CD. Chuck the CD in and it boots (hopefully). Just follow the onscreen instructions. Some older PC's may need a cd driver disk with drivers on it, in order to install Windows. (If Windows is on CD) You would have to go to the maker of the CD or search for the drivers, if you havent got any drivers.

To make a bootable floppy for things like flashing your BIOS(if you have something with windows in it already). Open Windows Explorer / My Computer. Highlight the floppy icon, and right mouse / format / and select make a system disk....

268247 2004-09-03 02:33:00 A "ramdisk" (8MB or not) doesn't exist on a floppy. It's a programme which sets up some memory ("ram") to behave like a disk. OS installation routines often use one ... various programmes are stored compressed on a floppy, and expanded into and run from the ramdisk, without touching the real hard disk. Graham L (2)
268248 2004-09-03 10:06:00 For Which Operating System do you want boot Disks?

Typically for 9x [95/98/me] it may be 1 Floppy Disk, for Windows 2000/XP it may be several

Also with later Operating systems e.g. Win98SE, WinME, Win2000, WinXP you may be able to boot from the CD by changing the boot sequence in you BIOS so it reads something like A: CDROM C: or CDROM A: C:
thats only if the BIOS supports it, many late model systems do.

Note that bootdisk.com when i went there last week now requests a donation before providing floppy disk images, personally i think it sucks, there is other free options out there

268250 2004-09-03 10:12:00 Okay i went to www.bootdisk.com again and its working

i am not sure if its they make a force donation screen if the hosting isn't paid or i went to a site with a similar name that was serving the same purpose but for a fee. Thought i would correct the info though.
