268189 2004-09-02 04:48:00 I can't seem to get a virtual server working through my Dynalink (RTA220) router.

I have a dynamic public IP, and the WinXP PC that I want to act as the server has a static private IP. I've configured a virtual server in the router to forward TCP/UDP addressed to a given port to the server PC, but nothing gets through...

Don't know what I'm missing - I tried creating an ordinary filtering rule in the router firewall to allow the packets, but that didn't work either.

It does work when I turn the router's firewall off, but don't want to do that for obvious reasons (also don't want to use DMZ if I can help it).

Anyone have a suggestion ?:| ?:|

I cant connect to myself when port-forwarding, I just have to get other people to do it for me, as the router gets confused when accessing the port forwards from within the LAN.

What's your Dynamic DNS?

I always keep my firewall off... maybe that's your issue there? I keep my PC firewalled, but not the router. Doesn't NAT take care of that? Excuse me if I sound ignorant there... firewalls and NAT, etc aren't my specialty!

268192 2004-09-02 07:29:00 I have a Dynalink RTA300 which I port forward with my web server, but I don't use the router's firewall either. I found it used rather limiting rules even on the low setting (block me accessing any ftp server) and I more depend upon the NAT. Did have a go and making some rules, but ended up with a mess :p Jen C (20)
268193 2004-09-02 11:09:00 I also have the RTA220, and also never have the router firewall on. It is a pain, as it blocks almost everything, and most importantly doesnt allow streaming audio from certain sites like Live365 which use multitudinous ports amongst hundreds of stations.

NAT plus use of a software firewall will give all the protection you need.

268194 2004-09-07 00:51:00 Call me paranoid, I guess... As far as security goes, I tend to be a bit wary of things when my knowledge isn't 100%.

I'm sure the router's NAT and my ZA is plenty, but I've set up the router firewall rules to suit (like you other guys, I wasn't too happy with any of the firewall presets), and I'd like to keep them in place as an extra, if redundant, measure.

I have finally managed to get the forwarding working :) but don't ask how ?:| - it's the way I first tried it (with the virtual server set up, and no alterations to firewall rules), but maybe as Chill said it was just a bit finnicky in the testing...

Really appreciate the help/input
