268019 2004-09-01 11:44:00 How about this puzzle
3 students buy a packet of cereal for $6.00. The person realises she has overcharged them by a $1.00 but as you can't divide a $1 by 3 she gives them 20c each and pockets the 40c So each student has paid $1.80 she has 40c thats only $5.80 Wheres the other 20cents?????????

They paid $1.80 each 20cents back from their original $2 3x$1.80 = $5.40 + the 40cents she nicked = $5.80 where is the other 20cents??

268020 2004-09-01 11:50:00 You're looking at it the wrong way around :)

the extra 40c takes it from $5 to $5.40, plus the 20c each student got back (60c) takes it to $6.

Make sense?

They got back 20c each = 60c, plus the 40c she pocketed = $1... $6 - $1 = $5 that should have been charged.

268021 2004-09-01 11:56:00 What if you look at it this way they paid $1.80 each and got .20c back and she has .40c.
they paid $1.80 x 3 = $5.40
change .20c x 3 = .60c
Total = $6.00
Where the hell did the .40cents come from?

268022 2004-09-01 11:57:00 Hi Sherilee

The three students have paid $1.80 each and the shopkeeper has $5.40 so there is nothing missing. The shopkeeper has the $5 purchase price plus the 40c overcharge makes $5.40, each student has 20c each x 3 = 60c, add the 60c and the $5.40 and there's your $6. Alternatively, out of the $6, the shopkeeper has $6 - 60c = $5.40 and each student has 20c x 3 = $6 again. You can't add the $5.40 and the 40c - because you have counted the 40c twice (it's in the $5.40 already) and the 3 refunds of 20c have not been counted.

The 40c is the difference between what they paid ($5.40) and what they should have been charged ($5.00), so she pocketed the 40c.

268024 2004-09-01 19:17:00 each student paid $2
each student got 20c back
therefore each student paid $1.80
3 x $1.80 = $5.40
The cereal only cost $5
$5.40 - $5 = 40c (which is what the person kept)
