267850 2004-09-01 06:45:00 ok right royally got me ear chewed off this morning about ADSL and speed. broadband.

a person has, jetstream, he is on 1GB,
he is telling me that 1GB is speed - not information usage?
i was of the understanding that you pay for downloads - web pages, emails etc,
he is saying No you pay for speed????? he says i have it all wrong, and i dont know what the ^%$#@ im talking about,

now im the first to admit im not a geek and this is way out of my depth..... and i just said my understanding of the situation, but if it is speed you pay for, what or why do others have to pay for info over and above of there caps?

also wanting a good link or explaination for this term please..... any suggestions, not even sure of the right terminology, never worried me before, but when someone is constantly on your case, saying get jetstream, or i need this ...... that and the other, one often gets very annoyed and tired of the constant badgering..... especially when connected with the word dumb......

cos i would like to be right for once or at least have a good comeback, to shove something at him where the sun aint shinning....

its been a long, bad day, sorry people.
and its no where near finished.

267851 2004-09-01 06:50:00 You are right Beetle :D

1 Gigabyte is the amount of data he can download/upload per billing cycle (one month). The speed depends upon the plan, the 128K plan is being phased out and most will be on 256K although for more $$ you can have faster plans.

A 256K plan equates to approximately 30-32 KB/s downloading, dialup averages 4-5 KB/s ... you can see the attraction for Jetstream. :D

If this guy thinks his speed is 1 G and is not aware of the data limits, be might be in for a rude suprise when he goes over his limit ...

267852 2004-09-01 06:52:00 Hi Beetle, sorry to hear you have had a bady day, IMHO you are right, 1Gb = the data cap & your "friend" will not be getting a data transfer rate of that magnitude - see here (jetstream.xtra.co.nz), and if you want some geek speak definitions try the foldoc computing dictionary (wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk).

That person is so wrong!

There is NO thing as 1GB/ps ( at lest Not here in NZ)

& unless I am wrong, you are right there beetle :)

You do pay for the amount of data you use.

I hope this helps :)
