To be exact, when it's starting Windows (hasn't come to the flash screen yet - just tried it again just now) the BSOB comes

267903 2004-09-02 00:32:00 did you finish the memtest last night? andrew93 (249)
267904 2004-09-02 00:34:00 No, I terminated it after 2 hours of running the test. Does it usually take that long to test the memory? bk T (215)
267905 2004-09-02 00:54:00 Hi bk T, I can't say how long it should take cos I can't see your PC, but like I said in my earlier post you have to do at least 1 complete pass and the programme will keep running until you terminate it.

See here (www.memtest86.com) - look at "Execution Time" and the subjects under "Detailed Description". You must do at least 1 full test to eliminate the RAM as the culprit otherwise you will go around in circles. Given you can now start the PC, we can safely say it is unlikely to be a PSU, mobo or BIOS/CMOS issue and we now have to look at the RAM, HDD etc.

BTW when you were getting no response before it sounds like the video card was not seated correctly or there was a dry joint in a power / video connector somewhere.

267906 2004-09-02 00:55:00 .... and if you have to leave the memtest programme running overnight then that's what you have to do to complete a single pass andrew93 (249)
267907 2004-09-02 01:01:00 Whats the motherboard?? Is it a P4? AMD? If P4, if the mobo has the 4 pin ATX 12v molex conection near the CPU, is the spare 4 pin molex from the power supply connected to it? So there's juice to the CPU? Spacemannz (808)

It's a Gigabyte GA-8S648FX mb, CPU P4 2.4 G. Yes. the ATX 4 pin is connected to the mb.

I'm running the memtest again now. It's test #4 - so far so good.

267909 2004-09-02 01:14:00 Cool! Sounds good!

Somehow, I dont think its the ram thats the prob.

If you were in around Mt Eden somewhere I could give u a loan of a 1.7 CPU. To see if it crashes with another CPU in it. Then we would know if the CPU is at fault.

Memtest - OK

You are right. It's not the RAM. Managed to get hold of another stick, put it in and still the same

Thanks, Spacemannz. I'm in Pakuranga, a bit too far away.

What's next? HDD? PSU? MB? or CPU????

Suggestions, please!!
bk T (215)
267911 2004-09-02 03:00:00 Nah if it turns on OK, most of the time, I doubt its the PSU either. You could try another hdd if u have a spare. The hdd is connected to IDE and power is going to it right? And either set as master or slave. And recognised in the BIOS OK? Is the BIOS entry for the hdd on AUTO?

If it beeps at least once I doubt its the mobo thats at fault.

What else is inside that case? ram, PSU, videocard, CPU,mobo of course.

What else? Any other PCI cards? IS the video onboard? AGP? PCI?

If the video is PCI put it in another slot....
