268726 2004-09-03 03:28:00 Has anyone found a cure for the DVD skipping problem? I have chased this problem with many hours of internet searches and trying various things.
I have tried switching off every non-essential windows program (w2k).... no difference.
Recently,I installed an aditional video card to run an extra monitor....really handy to have!.......
.....this seriously aggravated the skipping....and uninstalling the extra monitor restored it to " almost bearable".
Typically, the skips appear to come in 3 -4 blips and stall the sound and video simultaneously.
The baffling thing is that sometimes an entire DVD can be played without problem......or the skips come in "patches"....or it's just so terrible, that I reboot..... which can give a temporary fix.
Rumour has it that my 800mghz processor is borderline for DVD play..... would like a faster one, but hope to find a solution anyhow.

268727 2004-09-03 03:37:00 Umm yup upping the memory might help for DVD.

And a faster CPU might help a bit I think. What is it?? AMD? P2? 3?

268728 2004-09-03 03:38:00 If I were you I'd increase the RAM to at least 512.

There are always system processes running in the background (as can be seen from the Task Manager window) and these will always suck up juice - so to speak.

268729 2004-09-03 03:48:00 I would think its either a dodgy dvd drive,a dodgy dvd disc or an extremly un-optimised computer.

I have played dvd's on a 800mhz dell with intergrated video and 128mb of good old pc100 ram.

Ran like a dream.

Your CPU, RAM, Video card should all be find for playing DVDs. I used to play DVDs quite happily on my old Celeron 700 with 128mb, TNT video card and 12x DVD rom.

I initially had problems with the DVD skipping however. I tried all sorts of things (replaced the DVD drive, tried several video cards, that sort of thing) and then discovered that if it was my DVD player software that seemed to be causing the problem. I just used the software bundled with the drive (PowerDVD 2 or 3 if I recall - it was a while ago). So I tried WinDVD4 and PowerDVD4 and the problem went away immediately, and I've never had it return (nor have I used the bundled software again ;))

Try changing your player software - it might just work :)

268731 2004-09-10 03:58:00 Thanks for the good comments!
....I would certainly like more ram and cpu speed etc but are fairly sure it's not the prob and computer is optimized well.
Another piece to the puzzle is that if I rip a dvd to hard-drive, it plays perfectly....even thru the same player software (powerdvd4)

268732 2004-09-10 04:39:00 Ram is tons for this, as is CPU!
PowerDVD 4 recommends at least a 350Mhz Pentium2, Athlon, or K6-2 CPU.
I KNOW for a fact that DVD's play fine on my P2 350Mhz w/64MB Ram!
All this "Get 512MB Ram" business....
The XBox has 64MB Ram and it plays DVDs without a worry!

Is DMA Enabled on the Drive?
How many players have you tried?
Have you used any Codec pack's on the PC?

Chill.

268733 2004-09-10 04:41:00 Idea:
Grab DVD Shrink (http://dvdshrink.org) and rip it to your HDD.

If it still skips - Then its software
If it works fine - then its likely an issue with your Drive :-)

268734 2004-09-10 05:05:00 get DVD region free and tell it to enable UDMA.

worked fine for me on 900mhz celeron, 256mb ram, 16mb integrated video.

268735 2004-09-10 05:09:00 Seems like a bit of an expensive solution to something that can be done free done you think?

I totally agree with getting DVD Region-Free though, its brilliant if you're running Doze....
