268746 2004-09-12 23:44:00 Firstly resolution....I have tried every setting available and combination of settings...and in conjunction with quiting unecessary progs.

Secondly...the IDE issue.....I can report that the hard drive and the dvd are on IDE1.....they are connected with a "ribbon", first looping to the HD and the on to the DVD.
A CD drive is on IDE2.
How can this be reconciled? Can I put the DVD on IDE2 and the CD on IDE1 with the HD? Or can a DVD and a CD share an IDE? Is this a change I would need to set Master/Slave settings?
Comments, tips and how-to's please?

thats most likly the cause of your problem. simply put the dvd drive on ide2 (don't forget one has to master and the other slave).

also it may pay to check the cd and dvd cache settings (i suspect they may be a bit small). cacheman is a handy program.

268748 2004-09-14 12:18:00 CacheMan...what a cool program...thanks tweak'e.

I put DVD on IDE2....Its now listed in bios IDE settings as a DVD,
whereas before it was installed as a CDrom. Could this be a problem?
In the meantime, I had unplugged the CDrom, so the DVD had sole use
of IDE2.

SSSssssoooo far.....SSSsssoooo good...Well 2hrs trouble free.

A question.....If a DvD has the sole use Of an IDE, should it be set to
master or will slave be just as good?

Good tip re IDE sharing, Spacemannz, thanks.

268749 2004-09-14 20:43:00 No worries Fred :)

If a DVD is by itself on IDE2 it can be set to Master no prob at all. A CD can go on IDE2 as well. It wont hurt it. (playing DVD SHOULD still work, without skipping).

I have A CD writer and DVD writer on IDE2 myself. Theyre fine. The CD Writer is set as Master the DVD burner as slave, as the CD writer is the faster of the two.

So, yup if u like keep the hard drive on IDE1. And put the DVD/CD back on IDE2 as Master/slave, by setting the jumper on the back of both the CD/DVD.

268750 2004-09-15 03:47:00 I have my DVD-ROM on IDE2 Master and CD-RW in IDE2 Slave, and have no problems playing DVDs or burning CDs (though I tend not to burn CDs while watching a DVD). I think I've also played audio CDs while writing files to CD, with no problems. Probably there is an advantage in having fast RAM and an AMD processor over the 1GHz mark.

If you forget to change the jumper (like I have), nothing drastic happens - you just get a reminder from the BIOS when you try to boot up again.

268751 2004-09-15 03:55:00 Yup its better to have cd/dvd on the same ide than cd/dvd + hdd on a ide connection. Spacemannz (808)
268752 2004-09-17 10:50:00 Well, it started skipping again.....though overall it may be better.......??
It's alone on IDE2....I don't have a replacement to try.
