There is a surplus of idiots "qualified" in totally reality-divorced money grubbing "schools" waving certificates, diplomas or other artwork. The average aptitude seems to be on a downward spiral, if it takes survival of the fittest to eradicate these pariahs - so be it. But bits of paper and/or more legilslation to protect us? Get real ! [ rant over ] R2 |

| 268962 | 2004-09-04 11:40:00 | I am wondering if while this is a user forum that those that practise computer repairs will be more inclined to not want this to occur because of cost . Or those that see a loss or more hinderence as a problem will highlight that as a problem I think its quite possible there could be a cost to the computer repairers or those associated with that . I do believe it could cost the consumer more money although i would argue it need not be a huge amount as it would depend on implementation . I am not sure if the consumer would want this, as i can't assume to know that, be wary of anyone that does, and just remember everyones opinions are there own and for a more complete analysis statistics may be calculated as opposed to an individuals opinnion as an attempt at a more exact measurement of society as a whole . I will highligh that from what the Australian government was what should be done the overall protection of the consumer it was not highlighted the repairers were hard done by but the consumer Ssteps I am not presently aware of may be used for consumer protection in a variety of cases, maybe not the above, but legislature and standards do change . Remember that some people dont want change because they try to protect their own interests, and those people who stand to lose may become very strong advocates and or opinionated because of the ramifications they may face I request that anyone that does express further opinion does state any involvement they have or interests which may skew their opinions, this means stating clearly if they work in the IT industry and stating what role they have in IT or any financial gain they stand to make from IT involvement . This is to be clear about repairers or those of similar nature stating whats best, when there interests may be opposed to that of consumer protection . If you as a repairer or shop owner want to express your view thats fine, but i do request you disclose this bias clearly . |

Why would you even contemplate a regulatory regime for the very small percentage of home computers (which are a non essential service) that get repaired . It would be the death blow to the repair industry, as fewer and fewer would be repaired, due to the professional risk that the repair person faces . That can only be reflected in costs, no other way . Is there one PC repairer here that could truly say that they have always diagnosed correctly and accurately and replaced/repaired only the essential part? Its just not possible to be that accurate . Yet under your system there would be a financial penalty (as well as compliance costs even if they had a perfect record), so all costs would have to increase . There is NO other source of money, only the customers wallet . How would you encompass larger companies that have in-house servicing? Regulatory regimes can have no exclusions . The repairers would probably need to take out professional indemnity insurance . Price it some time . Its probably more than the profit some make in total . And before you ask, I do not service computers per se, though I have done a lot of similar and associated work in the '80 and 90's . At one stage I had a job where I had 25,000 customers . So perhaps I might assume to know something about what they want . I am also VERY involved in regulatory and legal compliance matters . I have been involved professionally for some years . I write compliance rules and investigate compliance issues in another Industry . One that needs such compliance . And I find the thought of applying it to computer repairs quite . . . unbelievable . It must be a joke, right? |

Please before you go any further, could you answer this. |

| 268968 | 2004-09-04 13:53:00 | Well I've been watching this from the sidelines and decided I had better go back and read the proposals again. Unfortunately Captive I have to give your theories a big fat NO! This thread is a perfect example of why students and professors are in learning institutions. I'd be more than happy to debate every single aspect of your theories but can't be bothered / don't have the time. My bias = printer repairs and no I'm not willing to disclose any financial gains (whatever that means). P.S. No individuals were attacked, intentionally or unintentionally, in the writing of this thread. |
