2004-09-06 22:48:00 | Many thanks for all suggestions - Computer 1 (which has the modem) doesnot dialup of its own accord when it is the only computer running. During bootup of all the other computers they start dialing up the modem on No.1 as soon as the welcome screen appears, or if No.1 is already on the internet, the other computers have already connected to the internet before I can log on to any of the other machines. It would appear, that during the bootup process, something tries to connect to the internet. I have run both Adaware and Spybot, as well as trying Shortstops suggestion, but to know avail. There are no games or programs like Kazaa running on these machines. Any more Idea - PLEASE...... O |\/ \ /_

2004-09-07 00:05:00 | I wonder if its an option in one of the connected PC's BIOS'es?? One of their LAN options maybe enabled, when you turn it/them on?? Or it maybe something in PC1's BIOS that is activating the dialup when the others are turned on?? Under the NIC option in the BIOS?? BUT it does sound like it IS something to do with the LAN / the other PC's that are connected. Since it is ONLY affecting PC1. And not the others. Thats the only other thing it maybe, if you've turned off options 2 and 3 on PC'1's dialup. I take it the network cards on ALL PC's are built in??

It would appear, that during the bootup process, something tries to connect to the internet. What do you mean by this? before I can log on to any of the other machines? Do you mean log into Windows?? Or the net?? With ICS thats what happens, when other PC's are connected to a PC that is already connected to the net. They're automatically on the net. Since they're networked. |

2004-09-07 01:55:00 | Also the NIC's are a mixture of built in and PCI cards. if I turn off option 2 and 3 of the dialup options on Computer 1 the other computers networked to it are denied access to the internet. This afternoon I will have a look at the BIOS's of all machines, as there will be no one using them This network is part of a community organization that relies on a budget to run, and therefore, the phone line is classed as a business line, attracting a local call charge of 20 cents a minute. As computer 1 has a dialup modem and making a connection to the internet is classed as a local call, the phone bill is quite high if you have all computers running, and you turn your back and the modem dials up the internet, and sits there for 20 to 30 minutes doing nothing before someone notices it, raking up the phone bill. I can prevent this from happening, but it means all connections to the internet have to made from computer 1. If no one is sitting at No1, the operators at the other machines have to go to No.1 dial up, and return to their machine. A waste of time and it defeats the purpose of having a network. But then..... I could be wrong.... I'm not perfect..... I could have missed something somewhere

2004-09-07 02:42:00 | Umm did u ever find that preference/option in Zonealarm, saying something about This is the gateway / Use ICS or similar?? Is your version registered of ZA? I'm not sure if the free or/and the Pro (or the version with the serial #, supports ICS). I did use ZA once, BUT when I uninstalled it, when I had it, it locked me out of the net! So, thats the end of Zonealarm for me LOL. Thats true no point in using/having a network, if you cant use the networked PC's. And limited to PC1. And also, I take it theyre password protected, the networked PC's, since you said you usually log onto them? They shouldn't log straight into XP, if this is the case.

2004-09-08 01:43:00 | No... no option in the free version of Zonealarm about gateway/ICS, but will check out ZA Pro later. I took ZA off computer 1 and activated the Microsoft Firewall that comes with XP..... but alas, no difference, the networked PC's are still dialing up the modem on PC 1.... :_| Yes... each user has their own username and password. I checked out the BIOS of the PC's but nothing that I could see about the NIC's Oh well.... Looks like I will just have to put up with it until I can.....ummm...what about something else like giving sygate or maybe another firewall..... any suggestions

2004-09-08 02:04:00 | Umm the only thing I use is Norton Internet Security. I cant think of any free firewall. Unless u update to XP SP2. It's firewall maybe better. You could try setting up sygate. Never used it tho. But have seen that u need to add rules to it...
