2004-11-20 19:46:00 | I havent seen this specific fault in any help sites or on here, but I have now had it twice. First - My own machine (ATHLON 2500) running XP PRO updated fine with the CD version of SP2 Two weeks ago my neighbour came over and said she couldnt get on the net. I did some checks and found the XTRA shortcut pointed to a non existent DUN. Easy I thought, create a new one. However it would not let me and acted as if the modem was not there. Check and ran diagnostics but the modem was fine. Ran Spy ware checks, virus checks etc but no joy, then I noticed SP2 had been installed. It had apparently downloaded without her being aware. I used System Restore to roll it back and everything was fine. I updated Virus, Spy ware signatures etc and turned off automatic updates and advised her to manually install any updates except SP2 until I got to the bottom of this. A week or so later, a friend brought in his computer and OH DEAR, exactly the same problem. Rolled it back, installed AdawareSE, and Spybot, updated his virus signatures and tested 188 Spy ware infections and 2 viruses. Thinking about this, I decided that it must be an error caused by a faulty DL or perhaps turning off the computer during the critical Install phase after a download. Having established the computer seemed clear, I installed SP2 from the CD but the same fault reoccurred and I had to do the same, Roll it back and turn off the Automatic updates. Has anyone else come across this.

2004-11-23 12:10:00 | Have installed SP2 on approx 40 machines so far, all but three were great, ran slightly slower, took marginally longer to shut down but never enough to cause grief. But those three.......no common thread in their hardware AMD and intell, onboard vid and nvidia, didnt seem to matter they just kept on rebooting on the first restart. read many reports of this and tried a few "remedies" but in the end it was a gdisk and reload on them. If this happens to you, just as well you backed up..aye!! | Kwakers (1647) | |
2004-11-24 04:03:00 | I fear I must resist the urge to download SP2 untill a more propitious moment, have enough cock ups without adding to it. | Thomas (1820) | |
2004-11-29 07:09:00 | Well I was interested to read some of the issues some people had, and I have to admit till about 2 weeks ago I would have recommended installing XP SP2, but since attepting to installing it on XP Home and XP professional, both not pluged into a Domain, in all intances of intalling onto a Non-Domain PC the SP2 was de-intalled, the reason ?? well the PC slowed and stopped with no decernable disk activity, the PC's were VIA MSI main boards Athlon/Seperon CPU 512 MB RAM 40GB HDD, CD burner. So pleanty of resources, the SP2 was installed after a brand spanking NEW of XP. So if you are installing on a NON-Domain PC/Laptop Forget SP2, just causes more problems than it's worth, once again MS destroys its own reputation by releasing a BUG packed solution.

2004-12-03 11:01:00 | SP2 seems to be working fine on my computer, but i have noticed an unusualy slow start up ever since installing SP2; but im guessing its probably due to insuffucient memory on my comp. Any how, all good. | vk_dre (195) | |
2004-12-03 11:48:00 | Somebody mentioned the suggested minimum went up from 64MB to 128MB :-/ | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2004-12-05 22:11:00 | Just to add my penn'orth Problems with installing XP SP2 11 Sept installed SP2, no apparent problems 19 Sept, SPs for Network v1.0 and SP1.1 refused to install, unable to resolve, MS suggested reinstall XP, refused in view that Network has only been used to register one program. 26 Oct, pdf files cannot be viewed as they have a Windows Journal Viewer overlay plus System Restore has been corrupted, pdf problem resolved by removing Windows Journal Viewer 9 Nov, System Restore cured by Windows Repair, this involved purchase of a replacement XP CD-ROM with SP1 as the PC Company Recovery CD did not have all the files required to complete a repair. When carrying out repair lost audio, eventually got my own salvation and installed XP versions of audio driver. Reinstalled XP SP2 , currently no problems, Windows Update wants to install critical updates for Network v1.0 and v1.1 although only v1.1 is listed in the Add/Remove. Will not be touching these with the longest bargepole that is available. Conclusions 1 MS staff were very helpful but you get a lot of moves from rep to rep, thought one rep to one customer would save a lot of repetition. 2 After the number of times that I have been into the MS Knowledge Base think it is a pity MS did not make a better job of debugging SP2
