268653 2004-10-12 18:58:00 Well ive done three sp2 upgrades now and none of them have gone smoothly.

First one had to run twice to get it installed it crashed half way thru.

Second one, downloaded the service pack but found an error with it and wouldnt install, then said you cant download the service pack cause you already have it. Finally got it with brute force.

Third one was worst it installed fine then said i need to reboot, rebooted and could not get past the windows loading screen. Tried repair, it went into infinite reboot loop, then after two more sessions of repair it worked and had to do sp2 again it worked after this.

268654 2004-10-13 21:19:00 Hi Buck
I have a similar system, -xp pro 3000+ 1GB RAM on a Gigabyte mbd.

Also have Norton systemworks 2004 installed.

The install was sweet but after 20mins or so the system restarted then restarts randomly from there. Did you crack your restart problem. I'd hate to have to start from scratch as I had sooooo much trouble back and forth to Symantec to get their AV to stay enabled (before I installed SP2). Looking thro this thread I've enabled the bsod but it doesn't come up. It's like it's had a clean shutdown.

Any help would be appreciated as I can't count on staying on line for long.

268655 2004-10-14 04:44:00 Turns out it was the DSE mouse driver. see posting below under Buck. All going fine now. Buck (2980)
268656 2004-10-14 08:32:00 I upgraded XP home Athlon machine & all went well.
Upgraded XP Pro machine (1.7GhZ P4, 1Gb RAM) and things fell over.
Lost all network connections, told me network services wasn't running when it was.
Lost all help files, help services not running apparently.
Lost Norton Internet Security 2004.
Lost Media player, still no go after removing SP2.
After second reboot I lost the Taskbar, it had minimised but wouldn,t come up.
Removed SP2 and all came back, except for media player.
Tryed 2 different udgarde CDs, with or without Internet security running, same results each time.
Any ideas
Maybe I'll just have to upgrade the whole system!

268657 2004-10-18 16:52:00 A minor problem. I was running NAV 2002. SP 2 couldn't seem to work with it. It knew it was there but wasn't sure if it was working. It was.
Anyway I have now installed NAV 2005 and they work well together.

268658 2004-10-22 06:14:00 PROBLEMS: Have tried the SP2 update at home on a 1900+ Athlon XP. Seems OK but I get a scan disk error message each time I boot, it checks 4% of the volume (C Drive) then gets a null error message, quits the scan disk & boots normally? I cannot schedule a disk check either, exactly the same thing happens on a restart - get to 4% volume check then straight to a regular boot? Any ideas? bba12 (1139)

268660 2004-10-23 02:15:00 I updated my home pc (1.3Ghz) with out a problem. The built in firewall though has caused a lot of annoying problems eg I could use any ftp program, and the other computer on the network could connect to the internet through this PC but couldn't access it. I had to end up turning it completely off just so I can do everything I need to NathanTheKind (472)
268661 2004-10-24 02:36:00 I've installed XP SP 2 on three desk tops and when I used windows updates I had some minor network conection problems which I couldn't resolve. I reinstalled using a slip streamed disk (see www.theeldergeek.com) and it works beautifully. Detcts my Zone Alarm Pro firewall and Nod 32 anti-virus as well.

I gather that people who use windows update have been more prone to problems and people who use the XP SP2 cd don't tend to have as many issues. The exception seems to be people who don't clean up the spyware on their machine first and install SP2. This seems to cause problems so running spybot/ad aware first is a good idea and use the disk not the windows update.

268662 2004-10-24 10:13:00 Not sure if this has been covered already, but incase not:

Windows XP Home SP2 will not allow an upgrade to Windows XP Professional SP1. Apparently the former is more updated than the latter - irrelevant of the whole Pro/Home (+/- $100) thing.

Does this mean that if we are up to date as Microsoft wishes, all our previously purchased update packages are redundant?

Hmmmmm....
