268643 2004-10-02 01:27:00 I have upgraded a few up to today without any problems. However, today I upgraded my Dell latop with Belkin wireless adaptor, and it broke the Windows WPA-PSK encryption. Rather annoyingly it connected and packets were going back and forth however no communication was taking place. After much p1ssing around with device drivers I tried a new key and it worked. Where it used to work with a 32 byte key it now only seems to work with a 16 byte one. Nice of it to tell me this when entering it aye? Not. BIFF (1)

I have been looking through one of Langalists SP2 experiences on the following site and one person had this list of what wouldn't work and Stylexp was one of them.

Have a look at this link, 4th email from top, as it is really interesting [its not Microsoft's list]
Here (www.informationweek.com )
Note BootSkin x Stardock, Style XP 2 tgtsoft, UX Theme MultiPatcher 1.5.1,
Visual Basic 6 Microsoft, Visual C++ (16-bit) 2 Microsoft are among that list.
As I have some of these programs and also programs made using Visual Basic 5, I can't see how I'll ever be able to upgrade to SP2.

But good luck to those who go ahead anyway.

268645 2004-10-02 14:21:00 I have Visual Basic 6 and SP2, it works fine. It has also worked on the five computers at my work place that have VB (they all have SP2).

Only problem I have had was when I tried to install it on a new P4 Prescott I had made for a customer. That was an awful failure and I had to format - for the second time in a few hours. But there is a patch for that issue now.

268646 2004-10-05 07:17:00 I sat on the CD from PC World for a while, then one day last week found a huge download coming through - turned out to be SP2 from Microsoft. Thanks a million! Got sucked in and decided to load it after reading lots of good things on this site. Loaded OK, but problems as follows:
1) Locked up my Mailwasher programme.
2) Locked up "Remove programs" which I was trying to use to unload Mailwasher (recommended by their Help)
3) PC seemed to hang a lot all over the place
4) Decided to un-install and try again later, but "Remove Programs" only brought up those with the letter "A"
5) Couldn't do "GoBack" as all the marks prior to installation had gone.
6) Same for "System Restore"

Now I'm a little bit peeved (to be polite)
Can still operate but not very efficiently.
All advice gratefully received.

268647 2004-10-06 08:05:00 I've been running SP2 for a while now, I probably waited about a week before I installed it.

I havn't had any issues with it at all actually, my PC hasn't crashed at all since installing it. Performance seems to be better as well.

One thing I do know is that it is probably an essential upgrade to any XP system. My sister has XP Home and she hasn't patched her computer. For lack of a better term it runs like a greyhound on 2 legs.

Despite the 1st few reports on SP2 being unneccessary or not really that well designed prior to its release and also during the 1st initial weeks of it's release... I think overall it has been a good service pack release.

cheers

268648 2004-10-06 08:10:00 I had installed it on home-built desktop with XP Pro SP1 from PCW disk asus M/b, ouch!, kept locking up and Bios/CMOS kept resetting and not booting up...now reinstalled w/out SP2...much better.
Installed it on my Asus Laptop L4500R XP Pro SP1 basically ran well although seemed a little slow, had done a backup of laptop via its DVD drive...worked well before installing SP2. After installing SP2 drive would'nt work...kept write failing and not completing job...removed it and now it's ok but not as good as it was before installing SP2.

268649 2004-10-08 08:05:00 Installed SP2 (Windows Update Download) and immediately I began to notice extreme unstability and performance degredation on my system, a 3GHz P4 w/1GB Dual-channel DDR

Perhaps it might be best to install a clean copy of XP and then patch it up with SP2 and then install programs????

That would be the preferred option if you are able to do so. Reformat the Windows partition and reinstall Windows XP then SP2 and your programs.

268651 2004-10-11 03:41:00 Installed SP2 via windows update, on Athlon 1800+ 256ddr, no problems so far, running smoothly. promethius (1998)
268652 2004-10-12 07:37:00 installed SP2 on P2 366 with 128 MB RAM (yes, that is 366MHz). Still runs sweet, if anything it seems to have got faster (and it was already going pretty good). This PC runs:

Winamp 5.0.4
AVG 7 Free beta
Abacast streaming client
Farstone VirtualDrive 7
LAN Talk (program I wrote, permanently in tray, uses about 5MB ram)
Net Monitor
Real VNC 4
