| 268753 | 2004-09-03 01:19:00 | I have Win XP-Pro on 4 machines all networked together using Microsoft's Network setup wizard, everything is working fine. There are no games loaded, the only extra software loaded is Microsoft Office 2000 and antivirus software. When the computer that has direct access to the Internet is turned on, it patiently waits for me to dial-up the internet. However, when I turn on any of the other computers on the network, the first computer starts dialing up the internet, which I don't want. I have turned off automatic Windows Updates, Windows Messenger and anything else I can think of that would likely want to access the Internet. The firewall I use is Zone Alarm. There are no hidden dialers, and these computers have all been setup from new and antivirus software loaded before they accessed the Internet. Has anyone any ideas what could be dialing up? Any help would be appreciated. | zeph53nz (4084) | ||

(It uses the main PC's modem to dial out to the net). The networked pc/s DON'T have to have a modem installed for it to work. It'll use the main PC for this. As the 3rd. They're not required for other networked PC's to get access thru the main PC. Try unticking the 2nd and 3rd on the main PC. See if that fixes it. It sounds like its a setting on the pc thats dialling up, it's using option 2 on the main PC to dial out. |

Select never dial a connection, (if it isnt ghosted), it might be on dial whenever a network connection is not present. And it's using the main PC since option 2 is ticked to dial out to the net. |

| 268758 | 2004-09-03 03:56:00 | On the ICS computer (computer 1), I removed the ticks from Option 2 & 3. I then tried to access the internet from computer 2, but got this error message: "The Internet Connection Sharing computer is not configured to let network users control or disable the shared internet connection." I went back to computer 1 and replaced the ticks to option 2 & 3, and before I could get back to computer 2, the modem on No1 started dialing up. Checking the connection option in "Tools", "Internet Options" in IE6, it is set to "Never dial a connection" on computer 2. It is the same on computer 1. I went back to computer 1 and removed the ticks, but on trying to access the internet on No 2, I got the same error message as above. If Computers 2, 3 and 4 are turned off, this problem doesn't occur, so to my way of thinking the problem is not on computer 1, but on the other three machines. All Machines are running Win Xp-Pro with SP1. I'm thinking of installing SP2 in the hope it might solve this problem. Your thoughts please |

| 268759 | 2004-09-03 04:09:00 | Nope unticking 2 and 3 shouldnt affect the rest of the network for ICS. I use 2 XP Pro PC's here. This is the networked PC I'm on. Also going thru ICS. The 2nd and 3rd option are unticked on the main PC's dialup. It works fine. Zonealarm has in its options, or prefs somewhere (i dont use it, so cant remember where). That this PC is the gateway and to use ICS. I have a feeling this is NOT selected. If this option isnt selected, IT WILL block access to the net for the rest of the network. Find this option, select it, then try connecting thru the connected PC's. IT should then work. Keep 2 and 3 unticked. |

| 268761 | 2004-09-03 07:55:00 | Quick suggestion: 1] Start 1 computer at a time, wait awhile and see when it tries to connect. Once you have isolated the machine or machines: Option A] Backup Zone alarm config and or delete all entries and wait to be prompted for what wants to connect Option B] Run a Scanner which determines when a program tries to connect to the internet Option C] Run a network Sniffer on try and deduce from traffic logs. Option D] maybe others will have suggestions too. |
